How would you grade these three?

    This order:

    38D
    42S
    43D

Hope you like them. I loved the toning on the 38. The Die Crack on the back of the 42 looked interesting.

I only need the 45S now to finish my war nickel set. Then I am going to start focusing on some of the other earlier dates and maybe a few upgrades on ones that I have.

    Thanks for your opinions!

    Darryl

I'm interested to see what grade people judge that 38 to be, mine looks almost identical.

They're some really nice coins, congratulations!

Darryl why do you persist in collecting these awful ugly bits of metal!! Let me do you a huge kindness by taking them off your hands  LOL
Nice ones mate, I do like the 42 :D I have to say that I love the simplicity of the design on this coin and good luck finding the 45s :thumb:

By the way, that 42 S used to be a populat variety, with the die crack thru the S mintmark.
They called it a $ sign.

    Nice coins.

Thanks for the comments! Frank - With that crack a little off center would it still be considered as part of the dollar sign group? One of mine goes straight through the center and looks more like the actual symbol.

I hope someone gives me some opinions on grades - I am very curious to see where they would land!

    Thanks again!

    1938-D: MS-64
    1942-S: MS-63 - steps
    1943-D: MS-60 if that's a scratch in Jefferson's hair; MS-63 if not.

    Hope this helps.

    grades...

Are you going to disclose the assigned grades?

I would surely - if they were graded - that's the issue - they are not. I was hoping to see what others think so that I can get a better feel for grading Jefferson Nickels specifically. I appreciate that you took the time to look at them and am sorry that I cannot give you feedback on how a TPG would grade them. I would have guessed in the same range as you but was unsure how the die cracks would affect the grade.

It looks like there are some lamination cracks in the top of the head on the 43.

The surface is not seperated - I believe it is a Bi-Level die crack.

Die cracks, in theory, should not affect the assigned grade. I understand that the market grade is affected, whether positively or negatively, according to the "attractiveness" of said die cracks. This is the net effect of "market grading."

1938-D: MS-62 Nice coin, Looks dull in the pics. Fields are nice. Soft on the reverse.
1942-S: MS-63 Looks like a soft strike, Decent fields, Nice full length die crack.
1943-D: AU-55 To many dings on the rim for my liking on an Unc coin

Thanks Jim - I'm glad to say the 38 isn't dull in hand - lots of luster! You hardly notice the dings on the 43 in hand - the photos just really enlarge the coins to the point where you see everything. I don't mean to be defensive about the grades but I think they would do a little better.

Regardless - I really appreciate you taking time to look at the coins and share your thoughts! :)

    Best Regards

Didn't you mean to say to finish your FIRST set. Can't stop at just one LOL.
    Get looking nickels.
    I'd say they grade:

    1938D MS65
    1942S MS65
    1943D MS64

Love those die cracks on the 42. The 43-D as mentioned has rim dings which I think detract a little. The 43-D you should be able to find with bold FS for little money for FS is very commen for that issue.

Good luck on completing your FIRST set of war nickels.
