Just received this huge coin (35 mm) from Europe nice light sandy green patina, minted by Tiberius to honor Divus Augustus, more scarce than the Tiberius Dupondius with the same gate style but very hard to get in good preservation. But with a well centered and almost full obverse legend found it hard to resist and although the reverse shows a bit of uneven wear resembling a cloudy/misty day in front of the town gate. SPAIN, Emerita. Divus Augustus. Died AD 14. Æ Dupondius (35mm, 25.7 g, 2h).DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER CAE, Radiate head left / City-view seen from aerial perspective: city wall with five T-shaped crenellations fronted by main gate consisting of two arched bays flanked by two multi-story crenellated towers, each with arched window; gate inscribed AVGVSTA/EMERITA and decorated with four T-shaped crenellations. RPC 30b; SNG Copenhagen -; Burgos 1032. POST ALL THOSE EMERITA OR SPANISH COINS OUT THERE IN COINTALK LAND.
Can't say no to an opportunity to pull out my Visigothic tremissis Sisebut, Visigothic Kingdom AV tremissis Obv: + SISEBVTVS REX, bust facing Rev: + TOLETO PIVS, bust facing Mint: Toledo Date: 612-621 AD Ref: Miles 183a
I dig that city view reverse @Ancient Aussie ! Here is a Spanish fav of mine.. Obulco, Baetica, 2nd century BC, AE O: Female head, hair in bun, OBVLCO right. r: Plow above and grain below magistrate's name in Iberian text (UIUIBORTuN/MINUABoI). 29x31mm,16.3 g.
Very nice @Ancient Aussie Here is an offering from my collection featuring Tiberius: Tiberius; Ae As of Emerita Augusta [TI CAESAR] AVG PONT M[AX IMP], laureate head right Camp/City gate with two portals 27mm., 15.19g. I wasn't personally able to locate a reference for this but have been advised by the good folk at Forvm that it's RPC I 43.
A denarius, not huge, can't miss the chance of talking about Augustus 19 x 20 mm, 3.54 g; Hispania, Emerita Augusta, ca. 25 - 23 BC Ref.: RIC I 2b (S), RSC I 401, BMCRR Spain 112 Obv.: IMP CAESAR – AVGVST Bare head of Augustus to left Rev.: P CARISIVS (LEG PRO) PR, round shield with central boss within eight pointed star with studs, spearhead with short shaft above, machaira (curved short sword) below, linear border. On the reverse of this coin, a falcata (machaira) is a marker of Celt-Iberian identity on Roman republican coins. The falcata was used to great effect by the armies of Carthage in their wars against Rome. The term falcata is not ancient. It seems to have been coined by Fernando Fulgosio in 1872.
Thanks, I just love those rounded edges on these coins, I stumbled across this web site that specializes ancient Spanish coins and makes these coins easy to identify, worth a look here's the link....... https://tesorillo.com/articulos/templos/emerita/emerita2.htm

So there you go , you've learn't something you have a worn coin you can call it misty.... I love the style of the two Iberia Castulo coins, completely different to most other coins, nice.
Here's two Spanish bulls that I've always liked: Castulo, Hispania Ulterior Castulo mint Before 214/12 BC Obverse: diademed male head right Reverse: bull right, L and crescent above, "Kastilo" in Iberian script in ex; Bronze AE 17, SNG BM Spain 1359, Lindgren II 44, SNG Cop 216 Augustus AE As of Celsa, Spain. 27 BC-AD 14. Duoviri L. Baggius and Mn. Flavius Festus. Obverse: AVGVSTVS DIVI F, laureate head right. Reverse: L • BAGGIO above; C VI CEL to left, II VIR to right; (MN) • FESTO in ex, Bull standing right. ACIP 3164; RPC 273.
And a third... this one's pretty rough in the photo but better in hand. Tiberius Æ As of Caesaraugusta, Spain. AD 14-37. Obverse: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS, laureate head right Reverse: Bull standing right, with 'pediment' above head; C•C•A above. RPC I 334;SNG Copenhagen 553.
Cool! Ancient Spain, huh? Hmm... I had this rather humble Spanish mint Galba As in my 12C set. Never got around to upgrading it.
Another Augustus As from Iulia Celsa: 28 x 29 mm, 13.25 g; Colonia Victrix Iulia Celsa, 2 - 14 AD, Magistrates Domitius and Pompeius. Ref.: RPC I 278; Guadan 446; Ripolles 3159; FAB 811. Obv.: CAESAR DIVI F AVGVSTVS COS XII IMP Laureate head to right. Rev.: CN. DOMIT C POMPEI II VIR CV I CEL Bull to right.
Ive been collecting mostly from Spain lately, and mostly Iberian, but recently I have become interested in the Roman issues from Spain as well. This one from Celse, same Magistrate as the coin above. They are almost always a little rough in one way or another.
