@1948 Edward I just wanted to thank you for starting this thread. If only every collector had written a little of their thoughts for coins in their time!

Quite possibly so, but then taking the last bits of silver out of circulation coins was something that happened pretty much everywhere. And roughly (depending on how much the silver content was worth) at the same time ...

I also think we confused the chicken for the egg. The change in metals likely wasn’t a cause of the downfall, but a symptom.

I was eight, and I remember my grandmother showing me the new coins. She had a bunch of quarters and put them on their edge and so I could see the difference. I had never seen anything like it before, and so yes, I thought it was pretty cool.

I was joking, gentlemen. No sane person would suggest abandoning silver coinage led to the fall of the British Empire.

We need a "I'm not serious!" emoji.

Wow! A (Boyer's) Mallow Cup, one of the world's greatest candy bars, Made in Altoona PA, my birthplace. I haven't seen one of those since my family left PA in late 1957.

I was a teenager and just taking interest in the coin hobby. I was very disappointed that clad coinage was the new thing and silver was on the way out.
