    @Petercoin

It looks to me like someone may have "sandwiched" the dime between two pennies and put it in a vise.

Lettering would be backwards if it was a vise job, right?

It is backwards. Hold the dime, reading it's motto (IGWT) from left to right, and the imprint of the penny is backwards.

The 'cent' strike is from fake dies.

    Not a double strike/double denomination.

It's an altered coin - it did not leave the US
    Mint like that.

Yes! It is! Using your thumb and forefinger, hold the dime by the edge so that the motto (of the dime) is at the bottom to your left and the date (of the dime) is at the bottom to your right. Now, look at the "IN GOD" imprinted from the penny. It's backwards.

or did they open up the layers on the dime and insert the cents on both sides then closed the vise in blocks of wood to get the cents impressions ???

The 'Cent' design elements are not incused or backwards.

The Dime was struck with fake Cent Dies.

It's upside down, but not backwards...

    You're right, Fred! I wasn't thinking. It's still a fake, though.

Chris, I do the same thing too sometimes -

I'll reply to a post without -really- spending
the time to see everything that's on a photo.

it's very easy to make a fake die, especially a bad one.
One very visual identifier is that the coin is expanded in the section it was viced with the fake die. So it couldn't have happened in a collar .. they weren't smart enough to make one.

You have to ask yourself, how could a cent die fit into a dime press.

The only way something like this could happen would be if a previously struck dime had gotten betwee the gap in the dies in a penny press. This thing is still a fake error.
