Hi everyone I was looking through the Ike dollars I have and noticed that the D mint mark is more of a dot on some of them. Is this from normal circulation wear? I’m sure there is a term for it but I can’t think of it at the moment perhaps @paddyman98 might Know?
The center of the D is created by a tiny spike of metal in the die. The little spike freqently chips off turning the mintmark into a blob withthe outer shap of a D. In the case of your coin the spike hasn't chipped away completely so there is still a slight depression in the center of the D.
So , it’s a die chip inside the D. I have seen this often on many coins from pennies to dollars. I’m guessing this variety has no extra value. If it was a low mintage then it might be a higher value? Or perhaps if the coin was in more prestine condition.
@Conder101, I just noticed that the 9 in 1976 is completely closed. Is this a die chip as well? Thank you for the input
