Hi everyone Picked these up today 50 ikes for a 100$ The only years missing were 1973’ 75’ and 79’ Is this a good deal? My first coin purchase in thirty years. Any thing I should look out for?
There's a reason there weren't any '79s in there... Should be fun going through them. Look up the ID information on Friendly Eagle Variety for any '71 Ds. You can also look at the '76s for Type 1 and Type 2 varieties. Did you get any silver Ikes in the lot?

Yep I’m pretty happy they still look in good condition considering I didn’t even look before buying. And yes 100. Canadian.
Same reason there aren't any 75's! Edit: not exactly the same. The last year they made Ikes was 1978. They made Ikes in 1975, but they were dated 1776-1976.
Most people won't sell theirs for a dollar apiece. Why bother taking the time to sell them for face when they should bring about 1.20 or more each. Not like you can go to any bank and expect them to have them.
You did fine. If you do flea markets you may be able to get 3.00 each, over time for the ones you don't want to keep, even if they don't look that great. And if you find some BU ones then perhaps you will get that with a good year or variety. I still have plenty from when I purchased a hundred for 130.00 American. Have sold some and over time will likely sell the others. Some people like to pick them up cheap 1.50-3.00 each.
Kasia's right. I generally won't pay more than face value for them. That's why, even living in America, I've probably managed to find five or ten in the last three years or so.
Thank you all for your replies I feel like I got a bit of a history lesson as well. Which is fine by me because I love history! I noticed some of the D’s on the mint mark are closed over not resembling the D mint mark. Is this just from circulation ware?
As noted in 1979 they went to the Susan B Anthony dollar. The Carter quarter. The Betsy Ross dollar. (Because kids heard of Betsy Ross but not SBA). And 100 Canadian is $75 American, so it's relatively a fair deal. Technically they really are only worth a dollar apiece. But they stopped making them 40+ years ago and there are a couple of varieties to look for.
Nice buy! Jeff correctly pointed out that coins minted in 1975 bore the double year "1776-1976". And as cwart said, 1979 was already the SBA. The reason you didn't find any '73s was because it was the lowest mintage. In 1973, the Eisenhower Dollar was only issued as part of a mint set- kind of like the 1970 half dollar was never meant for circulation.
Does my heart good to see Ike's getting some attention. They sure helped fuel this youngsters numismatic fires back in the day..... Nice pick up! Enjoy them.
