Going through some pocket change this morning, I came across this 1993D Quarter that seems to have either ddd or die chips on the 993 of the date. Look on the inside of the 9s and the top loop of the 3. Any ideas?

Pretty sure that's mechanical doubling, but I'll defer to the experts.

Based on the 1993 photo, I'd see little argument. However, in the 993 photo I'm not seeing the type of definition I'd expect to see on the lower inside loops of the 9s from MD. On the other hand, the 3 looks like it has taken a hit from something hard and flat. If so and the 9s took the same hit, that could explain why (at least to me) there appears to be an absence of a MD strike.

    Semper Fidelis.

PS: Should note that I really have no other ideas on what caused the observed artifacts. SF/Fallguy

Thank you for your opinions. Just wasn't sure about the MDing because it is nowhere else on the coin.
