Well said!! I won't be buying anymore that's for sure. Well, at least the penny in the mint set looks good. I really don't like anything post 1981, though. Oh well.

That is the only reason that you bought the mint set? Not me, I get several every year.

I have never had a coin graded. It is a very expensive scam created by merchants and sold to collectors as the only way to go. The process was intended to verify that a coin was genuine. When we see the 2019 W penny we know it is real.

I have been collecting for 70 years. See this post if you like https://www.cointalk.com/posts/3397863/ And, as everyone else, am very disappointed in this Proof coin. I virtually stopped buy from the US Mint several years ago. All I buy is a few proof and mint sets for the kids and grandkids. The mint is in the business of making money by manufacturing so many different coins that it will make your head spin. Except for extremely rare coins I have every coin from the 20th Century. In 2000 I quit because it costs a small fortune to buy and store all the junk they are producing. I can't collect Kennedy halves because they are produced for big dealers to sell to collectors. The same with the dollar coins. All about money.

What a racket! At the age of 61, I should have known better. A not too expensive lesson learned! With your collection, surely you could sell the older ones.

My wife and I ended up with 6 kids, 13 grandkids and 17 great grandkids with 2 more due this year. I am sorting my accumulation into manageable sets to give to these offspring.

I will check with Ancestry. If it pans out what would one more pile be?

I just got mine and the cent is clean! I don't feel the need to buy any of the others, so I will put this one away for now.

Um...when everyone can profit from it, I don't think it is a scam. In the days of ordering from lists, you could get an MS60 that you would just not agree with, but with independent graders who were not the sellers.

Still, it seems like a huge racket just to get something verified as authentic.

It is a racket when it comes to moderns.........splitting hairs on otherwise common coins. When it comes to classics, I do like the plastic holders, but I buy them that way. I've always said this.......ya want it graded? Buy it graded. :)

My local coin dealer ordered 10 sets of 2019 proofs and got the W Cent in a separate cellophane wrapper with each set. They arrived yesterday, and I happened to stop by to buy a different coin from him. When he showed the proof sets to me, I said I was going to order a set which would have cost me $28 + $5 for shipping. He offered to sell me one of his for $29 and I said “deal”. I asked him to pick out a good set, and he looked through 3 before he found one that didn’t have stains on the W Cent. He was surprised at the number that were stained. Given what I read here, it doesn’t sound that rare. Here’s mine which I shot through the cello so not great pictures as the wrappers have scratches, but no scratches or stains on the coin, lol!
