I was at the PNNA coin show in Tukwila WA this past Friday, and picked up this coin. On it was written "Spitsbergen, 2013" and "25 rubles". I've not been able to find this one on-line, or even on eBay (searched the completed sales too). Can anyone confirm whether the info written on there was correct? Thanks in advance!
Fantasy piece it seems: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces93640.html Lettering: ОСТРОВ ШПИЦБЕРГЕН 25 РУБЛЕЙ 2013 АРКТИКУГОЛЬ Translation: The Island of Spitsbergen 25 Roubles Arktikugol (Arctic Coal)
Awesome! I knew someone here would know about it! So it's a fantasy piece like the Lundy coins I picked up recently as well (1/2 Puffin, 1 Puffin, 2 Puffins, 4 Puffins & 6 Puffins). I'll make a note on my foreign coins spreadsheet. Thanks again for the info, and for the fast responses! You all are a wealth of information.
Seattlite86...Are you still in the Seattle area? Did you go to the PNNA show in Tukwila this past weekend?
The whatnow? Have you got pictures? I was aware of the ½ puffin and 1 puffin but never heard of these.
The larger puffin denominations were produced in 2011 I believe - hence fantasy pieces again. The only year for the original 1/2 and 1 puffin is 1929.
The Spitsbergen 1946 and 1993 issues are "real" in that they were used at the Arktikugol mines. The Norwegian government objected to the "Russian Federation" text on the '93 pieces (as Spitsbergen is not Russian territory), and I think they were withdrawn. Later "coins" are fantasies indeed - the mining company does not use coins any more ... Christian
I purchased these 2 last year - But 2 Puffin and 4 Puffin are Fantasy pieces - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces42687.html https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces42690.html
Sorry, didn't see the request. Obviously mine are fantasy, but that's okay. I might later decide to get the real thing, like in the above pictures, but for now, these will do...leaving me more money for thalers...
If I could impose once again....this one had Nepal written on the original flip, but nothing more....and I can't find any coins like this on eBay. Does anyone know anything more about it?....or if it's even from Nepal? I think it's an interesting looking coin at any rate... So many interesting coins....so little money and time.... sigh
Your reverse picture is upside down. It is from Bhutan. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces17301.html
