While CRH I found this 1980 p Nickle that weighs 5.3 gram , and coinstar machine keeps throwing it back to me. Anyone know what is wrong with it ?? Tried different coinstar machine and it does the same ???
Interesting.. I have a Clad Quarter that the same thing happened at a CoinStar machine. Kept rejecting it after putting it back in like 6 times. I don't know why it would be. Just a mystery.
I found on Google some people talk about something called Henning nickel in mid 1950's , that say the counterfeit nickle weight 5.3 gram !!! First time for me to know there was a counterfeit nickle., but this one is dated 1980 !!??? So confusing
Possibilities are infinite at this point of confusion, hoping to come a cross someone who knows better than I do
I advise you to find another balance to compare the weight. The 5 cent coin can have a variation of 0. 194 gram , so a nickel can weigh from 4.806 to 5.194 grams. Using this your coin still reads a little heavy, but before you get excited, that balance you show only has an accuracy of .1gram, so it would be hard to say. If your balance has a calibration weight for it, use that and the instructions to calibrate your balance and reweigh. If you have a small paper container with 1 gram of artificial sugar, you can weigh that and see. Most collectors who look for weight variation use a 0.001g balance. The coinstar is probably calibrated for 5.00grams with minimum tolerance as they want 'good' coins. Jim
I did weight over than 25 nickel from the same year that I have and they all have the 5.0 or 4.9, 4.8 gram except this one, that keeps giving me 5.2 & .... 5.3 gram mostly. And tried the coinstar in 3 different locations and all 3 no matter how many times I try they all keep throwing it out back to me. I have a coin shop close to me, will stop by tomorrow and let them weight it cuz what you say is way above me to understand What would you recommend to do if it reads 5.3 at the coin shop ??
