This pic is from the internet, I wish it was mine. It‘s from a bank that used to be in my town, and is now preserved as a historical site. If anyone EVER comes across this for sale, or other notes from this bank, please please pretty please let me know. Thank you, and awesome prizes! A00296A9-BC02-4925-8DC3-A219222338EF.jpeg

    I have a question, but i don't think it warrants a thread.

If i submitted a coin to a grading company with crazy coloring, but it was in those mint cello bags (think older mint sets, like the 1999 set), would they have to grade it straight or could they still say questionable colors?

Just curious, i have nothing to submit of the sort (or i would have posted it to show off!).

Considering that the cello bags aren't gas tight, I think they could still say questionable with some justification.

I will agree with @Kentucky since I don't really know, but I do think that sealed mint cellophane would give them a little more credibility, even if that's not ironclad.

The design on the Austrian coin looks beautiful! I cant think of any other coins with 9 sides(or maybe I'm overlooking something obvious).

My most current coin. I am currently conserving my resources until this summer, and sometimes getting a few pieces of paper money. Still though, this makes me very happy to look at. 195938AA-4512-4FC2-89DF-F3624C8F2532.jpeg 9B2292EF-DC40-48CE-83C1-147CE797560A.jpeg

Wow, that's a good find. I also enjoy digging through dealer's "junk" boxes. I picked up this thinking that it might be a Colonial copper, and instead was surprised to ID it (based on the legend) as an Irish half penny from 1685-1688. I can only imagine how it ended up in a Texas coin shop... probably after being worn for years by supporters of the lost Jacobite cause who were forced to flee Ireland during the Great Famine.

Order of preference: 2, 3 (I already own the coins in 1 & 4, so move on and draw another number if mine comes up for one of those).

And now, for something coin related . . . I don't believe I've ever shared this with anyone: my late older brother's keychain (it's OK, it happened a looooong time ago, when I was just 14).

A cheaply made little doo-dad, and frankly rather unattractive, but of course imbued with lots of sentimental value.

I don't use it as a daily carry myself for fear of losing the Buffalo. Instead, I keep it in my car's glove box with a couple of seldom used keys on it.

Apparently the mount wasn't too secure when my brother had it. I think the holes punched into the metal were a crude attempt to keep the nickel in place.

    Ag76 Coins 'n' history

    Entry post.

In The Sovereign State and Its Competitors, Hendrik Spruyt argues that centralized states were better able to standardize coinage than city-states and city-leagues like the Hanseatic League, and that this made states more efficient than non-state forms of governance. For instance, he writes on page 161, "The French state fared better than the Hansa in centralizing the minting of coin. The league did not manage to standardize a particular coinage, and many towns continued to mint their own. . . In France, by contrast, the Crown, since Louis IX, had successfully curtailed the coining privileges of the lords, and took coining back into its control."

What Spruyt ignores is that standardization of everyday coinage was not important for long-distance trade. Late medieval merchants used the gold florin of Florence, and later the Venetian ducat, for long-distance trade. Standardization was little benefit to the integration of markets during this period. Moreover, the French kings repeatedly debased their coins, instigating devastating hyperinflations in the 15th and 18th centuries. Maybe the sovereign state was not so efficient after all.

    Prize preference ordering: 3, 4, 1, 2.
