I've seen this on numerous Presidential Dollars. It's damage, from being jammed in the edge lettering operation. It's seen usually on errors, but I've seen it on normal coins too. The edge lettering is put on the coins after they are struck.
Fred got to it before I did. There were a lot of these seen back in 2007. The edge lettering on the coin is incuse so the letters are raised on the edge die. It the pressure is too high forcing the coin against the rotating edge the coin may stop rotating. When that happens as the edge die letters come past the coin they don't impress letters into it, they scrape a gouge into the edge of the coin.
Looking at the edge in the photo do either of you have a value range like low, medium , high level or what venue the author might look for previous auctions or sales, if either wish to answer. Thanks Jim
Thanks Fred! I thought it might be something the author and others might like to know. Well I was curious also, although I do not collect those Jim
I wasn't going to weigh in on this one until I saw that you are an author. I am as well. The reason I began writing is because I like words. Yours are very good, well placed and enjoyably cordial. I too use italics and find them very useful. So after dealing with publishers and editors I find nit pickers and second guessing amateurs to be obnoxious irritants rather than useful critics.
Most authors actually choose to write to their audience and not beyond it. If he had his audience --- the bulk of Cointalk members --- under consideration, he would have chosen to keep things a whole lot more concise, very much less verbose/wordy and not go for the annoying flairs. Most CT members want to help, but he is only, in his chosen style and content, appealing to a small percentage of members who might enjoy a good discourse in this vein. And at the same time, he evidently expects that same minute number of CTers to also have the inclination to wade though the posts and have the interest to help if possible. He is actually lucky we have people like Fred on here who answer even if it takes time and effort to wade through annoying styles of writing to answer. We aren't exactly Dead Tree Fragment audiences for the most part, and even if we are, this forum is no book like that.
I think I am starting to connect the dots and have concluded that @Howard Black is either Lewis Black or Howard The Duck. In either case, we should be honored to host such a personage!!!
Howard Black, Lewis Black , Howard the duck ( unlikely as Steve Gerber passed in 2008), or others can participate or impersonate who they wish, as long as it is not a copyright problem and they obey the rules.

I will never understand how someone can get a cat to participate in those photos unless their paw and tail is tied to the container. Mine wouldn't wear a collar more than 2 minutes so I had the vet neuter them and cut the tip of an ear off.
Boy you seem to really like to put people down. What is it with that? My comment was all in jest and @CoinCorgi knows it. I was actually LOLing when Corgi posted that. Bye, Felicia
