Here is one of the very first US coins i ever bought. I was really excited back then (1982) to be able to find this. From a flea market in Belgium. Do you guys think it grades a full good? or maybe a tad better? The "L" in Liberty is partly visible. The rest is not (at least i can't see it). As far as i know these are graded by the word LIBERTY primarily right?
Please let me have your opinions,
    Eduard

I think it would grade VG-8 on a good day. Tom

Good to G6. I don't think it will grade VG but still a nice example.

LIBERTY is a factor, and if it were just for that part of the coin it might go VG. IMHO, however the top of the obverse rim looks worn into the field, which would give it G at best. The reverse looks G6 to me.

Nice coin! I would grade it G6, but a tpg might grade it VG8.

I'd acll it a VG only because some of the feather details and eye details remain. Too bad more of LIBERTY isn't showing.

Thank you all very much. I guess then this coin is a solid Good, stretching it a little maybe Good 6 or so. I can live with that.
I was extremely happy to find this piece all of those years ago.

By the way, i remember reading somewhere that one of the key diagnostics for legit 1877 and 1872 IHC's is a weak "N", specially the foot of the N. Is that correct, and a way to tell good coins from fakes?

    Thank you all,
    Ed

Yes MOST(but not all) 1877's have a shallow N. Proofs I believe have a bold N and there are some circulation strikes on the 1877 with bold N. See this link here which is part of this web site. The 1872's can have both shallow N's and bold N's - you can see that at the site aldo.

I would say a g-6 due to being able to see the l in liberty, but it also has slight corrosion around the bottom of the wreath and in a couple of other places.

This is a coin I would grade G, but TPGs would grade VG all day, in my opinion, as they more often than not overgrade this key date coin...MIke

I would go G-6. Its has a lot of rim, and some detail on Miss Liberty including some detail on the feathers. I have alot of indians like this one (not 1877 though) - better than good not good enough for VG. I think to be very good - some of the letters in "liberty" in headress must be present - which I do not see on this coin. It also has very nice detail on the reverse for the grade.

Man, nice coin! :thumb: Very tough key date. I'd say it is G, might go VG, but I am no expert. Nice coin! :thumb:

    IMO, it's a G 6. Compared yo my 1877 AG 3, yours is a beauty.

I agree that it is a G-6! However, if in hand, more letters in LIBERTY are actually readable then it should go VG-08. Another nice, rare and highly sought after coin! Thanks for sharing!

Put me on the G-6 bandwagon. Could very well get the key date bump and end up in a VG-8 holder though.
