Most of you are aware that the NCAA’s men’s basketball tournament (referred to as March Madness) is about to begin. I’ve always thought it would be cool to do something similar to that but with different coin designs facing off until only one coin design remains. I was thinking about this idea again today and realized that something like this might actually work with classic commemorative half dollars. There are 48 unique designs made between 1892 and 1954. This is good because (1) since the designs are all unique, it would make things interesting instead of having iterations of the same design appearing multiple times, (2) it would be a fairly balanced playoffs since there are many nice classic commemorative halves that could feasibly win, and (3) 48 is divisible by four, which makes it easy to set up a bracket. Since there are only 48 designs, the top four seeds would get first round byes. If enough people are interested in something like this just for fun, I’ll get to work setting up the bracket. I’d also try to come up with a name for it that wouldn’t violate any NCAA copyrights. Most likely I would have people vote between designs on Survey Monkey. Any comments or criticisms (or name suggestions) would be appreciated! I personally think it would be fun, but if no one else does or if there’s a fatal flaw I’ve overlooked, it’s better for me to find out now.
Good question. I would take care of them for each matchup and would probably use PCGS TrueViews since it would be fairly easy to find good representative coins for each design.
You maybe want to see if someone wants to submit a picture of their coin. Makes it a bit more inclusive.
