    Hi all,
It's a beautiful day in NYC. Great weather for Metal Detecting. So today I did a 5 hour hunt at Coney Island Brighton Beach!
I did ok for this time of year. When the beaches get more crowded later on then it's really time for the good stuff!
My totals of US Coins and Misc -
    25C - 7 each
    10C - 10 each
    5C - 8 each
    1C - (in good shape) 35 each
    1C - (Corroded) 25 each
1 - NYC Aquarium Elongated Cent
    1 - Junker Ring
    1 - Toy Car

Brighton Beach, and you didn't find any Russian spy coins?

What do you mean by "Russian spy coins", Chris?

paddyman- Interesting that most of the copper cents you found have already started decaying in such a short time.

Also, was there any silver? It's difficult to see the dates on the quarters, dimes and nickels.

The Russians were known to hang out in that area

Ah, yes. There is a Russian film from 1993- "It rains again on Brighton Beach".

There were many Copper plated Cents in excellent condition. Those are fresh coins most likely Cents that were thrown into the water by Hindu Indians and their customs.. I saw a lot of citrus fruits also on the beach. That is evidence that the Hindus were there. They throw coins and fruits to their deities.

If you have seen any of my other Metal Detecting threads, I usually mention if there was a silver find. Most of the time there is not. Like todays hunt.

I'm jealous! Probably a good month before I'll be able to get into the ground!

The first mention of "magicians' coins" that I remember were the hollowed out nickels that were used by Russian spies to pass along microfilm to their contacts back in the 50's.

Ah, I see what you mean. In "Bridge of Spies", I think there was a hollow nickel used also.

"Bridge of Spies" was the movie with the hollowed out nickel. It's a very interesting story. I lived in Brooklyn, NY (and still do). I remember reading about it as a child. If you Google "Hollow Nickel/Rudolph Abel" you can read about the facts of the case. This thread made me read about it again. Thank you @paddyman98 for starting this thread and bringing back old memories.

Are any of those hollowed out nickels in private collections, or were they all seized by the NSA?

I think that hollowed out coins are still made- I saw some on ebay. Even if they were seized, new coins are being defaced to produce a "spy tool".
