I have been collecting type coins since high school in the 1960s. I completed the set s few years ago from the half cent to $20 gold + the “old commemorative coins.” Most people can’t do that because there are 5 or 6 figure coins in the set depending on the grade. It’s a lot fun because every coin is different, and each one has a story. Have fun. If you want advice, I can be a resource.
Thanks, John. I figured type set collecting would be a bit more interesting than date and mint mark abd a way to collect couns I would otherwise nor be able to collect.
Nice start. Keep it up at that level as long as possible. That's the way I started. Now that I'm close to completion I've had to go as low as VG-8. That's my 1793 Flowing Hair/Chain America cent.
A type set is a great way to collect coins! Have you considered building a registry set? That’s my US 7070+gold set... still missing a lot of coins but I am working on it. https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetGallery.aspx?PeopleSetID=190377 A couple of other CT friends have sets here too. It’s not about competing but I like the way it’s organized. It’s also pretty easy to get more information on a specific coin.
Here is a link to my half cent though non gold dollar type set, which is complete, according to the NGC rules. It took me a little more than 40 years to get there. https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetGallery.aspx?PeopleSetID=3081
Good luck! Off to a good start. Agreed about considering a registry just from a tracking standpoint - don't get sucked into caring about "points" IMO. On PCGS you can build a digital album like this if the link works: https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/u-...7070-modified-type-set-1796-date/album/176323 I personally like to work out sets within sets and over time keep expanding. Like I'm working on the 12 piece gold set which also fits inside the dansco 7070 which fits inside larger US type sets ,etc. Type collecting is a great way to go so many routes you can take.
I had a period like that. I would get all of the cent type coins, and then I'd get all the quarters. Completing a group like that gave me a sense of accomplishment instead of just having a lot of different denominations scattered a random.
Amazing set. Mine is good but yours is well beyond that. I'm missing 3 coins: -- 1796 Dime -- 1796 Quarter -- 1796 Half Dollar The dime is within my reach but I'll need a lottery win to get the other two.
x2! Just got done scrolling through, amazing stuff @johnmilton The 1806 50C and 1800 H10 stood out, some great early era coins in there.
I had really wanted one in VF to match my 1796 Quarter, but you sometimes have to buy what's available. Liz at JJ Teaparty liked the coin and said that it would proably work in a trade some day if I were to up grade. Since you have enjoyed that set, here is my gold set. https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetGallery.aspx?PeopleSetID=5345 Since I bought one of these coins when I was high school, I guess you would have to say that it has been 50 years in the making.
The 1901 Liberty Head $10 gold piece. I bought it at Stacks' as a "select Unc." on a trip to the Columbia University Scholastic Press Convention. I was the editor of my high school newspaper.
Going to focus on the Classic coins for now. Can pick up modern coins anytime as they are readily available.
Speaking of lottery money, the 1921 anniversary is coming up soon - a 1921 year set would make a pricey but impressive mini collection - a St. Gaudens double eagle would be the lottery coin for sure . There might be an opportunity to sell such a set at a premium in 2021
Awesome find for a high schooler! $10 libs are one of my favorite series wish I could find a gem raw somewhere. I'm the same way. I'll spend months looking for the right example of a classic series and anything modern pains me to fill the hole and I normally end up getting a cheap proof for the slot just to get it over with.
