Change from the minimart. Is this accurate enough for a prelim check before I spend money to get it graded?

I think you think you have a valuable penny there. There are large and small date. That is a large date. I made the same mistake when I got back into collecting. :(

Sorry but the 1982-D large date copper is not rare and certainly not worth spending $30-$50 to have it graded. It's only worth saving if you are collecting Lincoln cents and don't have one in your collection.

Are you already a member of a TPG? Meaning a third party grading service?

Then you need to first find out what they are and how they operate.
There are annual membership fees, pricing tiers for grading and attribution fees for Mint Errors and Varieties. It could all get pricey and a Cent like yours is not worth it.
Or you can go to a local coin shop and tell them to send a coin to get graded if they are members. But you probably would be paying a bit more for the shop fees for handling your coin.
I submitted 6 coins in early January and I'm still waiting for them to get back to me.. It's also a long process. It's all so much fun

I know that you prefer to use NGC, but I should mention that January is the worst time to submit coins to NGC because they usually get a surge in submissions at the FUN Show the first week of January.

Oh I know.. But if I wait until later It's the same amount of time I would need to wait ;)
I just submit and forget about it!

they made over 6 Billion 1982 D Large Date Cents.
so .. figure out the odds of it's valuation above 1 cent ...

You need to check a Philly or zinc cent and find yourself a "small date" and then you can compare the two right in front of you. It will be a good learning tool to have yourself a small and large date for reference.
