My only pickup from the Whitman Expo: Austria AR Corona (1908) KM-2808 60 Years of Reign Commemorative Prooflike This example has great frost and deep reflectivity. I've heard of at least one prooflike example of this issue, but this is the first time I've actually seen one. I submitted it to NCS/NGC since they are tough on giving the PL designation to world coins and there are at least a couple spots where conservation would help.
Nabbed a few coins at the Whitman Expo as well. Oddly one of my 'core' coins for the weekend was purchased via a BIN on eBay as I was getting driven to the train a bit before 06:00. I haven't photo'd that one yet (my other souvenir from the show is a nasty cold). I posted one in the Japanese error thread and a couple really belong in the ancients forum. This one qualifies for here though, roughly 1860s and a local issue from Akita, Japan. 4 momme 6 bu and on my scale 17.15 grams. Has a couple scratches and other handling.
It was a Whitman buy. The BIN was Albanian and I'll get photos processed later. What the heck here are the others. I'm not sure where the cut off is for Ancients vs. World forums. I don't collect medieval and I don't collect Anglo-Saxon pennies, yet here it is (I was under the influence of a friend from another forum): From the seller's website ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of All England. Æthelred II. 978-1016. AR Penny (19.5mm, 1.27 g, 12h). Long Cross type (BMC iva, Hild. D). Stamford mint; Svartgeirr, moneyer. Struck circa 997-1003. + ÆÐELRED REX Λ(NG)LΘ, draped bust left; pellet behind neck / + SPE RTGΛ R M’Θ STΛN, voided long cross, with pellet at center and triple-crescent ends. SCBI 7 (Copenhagen), 1149; North 774; SCBC 1151. EF, toned, small mark on obverse, otherwise, much as struck. The truly Ancient coin is really an offshoot of my Albanians. The Albanian set is 'All About Zog' (ie 1920s-1930s) and were designed by an Italian mint engraver. At the time the coins were heavily influenced by the King of Italy who was an avid coin collector and thus many used the ancient coin designs as inspirations. I picked this ancient because 1. the eagle is standing/looking left (though it's not a perfect match) and 2. is otherwise awesome: Provincial Issue of Seleucis and Pieria. Laodicea Ad Mare, Under Septimius Severus, AD 193-211. AR Tetradrachm. 27mm, 13.65 gr. Prieur 1149. Obv. Laureate and draped bust of Septimius right. Rev. Eagle holding wreath in its beak and looking left, star below. And the reason for including it with my 'Albanian Antecedent' set (I change the name every time I post it...)
Here is the pre-Whitman Albanian. It's in a 64 ANACS slab and about as nice as a 1930 I've seen (one other nicer I can think of). Not a pricey coin, yet not easy to find in a gem. My official NGC set only has a 58.
Not sure about rarity by population per se. Heritage and Stacks both have archives showing a handful. Stephen Album lists this type occasionally. Now that I've started to look at some of the overseas auctions they are there too. The Hartill book uses a scale of: ER*-ER-VR-R-S-C-VC (extremely rare/very rare/rare/scarce/common/very common) and this one qualifies as VR. PCGS has certified 21 of them. Is this vague enough for you ? In other words they are obtainable, but not coming out your ears common like the basic rectangular 1 bu (of which there are varieties of value but I have not learned that yet).
An interesting coin type I didn't know existed. Pretty rough, but going rate for these it seems. Charles II (1649-1685), Copper Bawbee or Sixpence, 1677 Obv: CAR•II•D•G•SCO•AN•FR•ET•HIB• ; Rev: draped and laureate bust left, R: crowned thistle, NEMO•ME•IMPUNE•LACESSET•1677•
Added the Libertads to my Mexico Bullion Collection. These have an antiqued finish. Mintage is a low 40,000 for the 1 ounce and a very low 2,000 for the 2 and 5 ounce. I am contemplating having them slabbed. The 1 ounce is standard 40mm, the 2 ounce is 48mm, and the 5 is a whopping 65mm in diameter. 2018 Mexico Antiqued Finish Libertads.
GB 1868 Florin (2 Shillings) MS63 I feel if it wasn't for a few marks on the Obverse, this one would have had a great grade. Reverse is very sharp.
