1980's and later. Its one of the series called the "Syrian Fakes" first produced in the early 1980's to 1990's. This was one of the more produced types, you can see the shadow of a menorah on the discus.

What percentage of "ancient" oil lamps on the market would you say are just modern mass-produced fakes? And how are they ever even authenticated?

I wish we could buy " slabbed" lamps. Ha..

Only a small percentage are fake, but they tend to turn up in the same places (Ebay mostly). Authenticating pottery can be easy but can also be difficult. The best method is a thermo-luminescence test, which can tell you within a small range of about 50 years or so when it was fired. But that is an expensive test costing typically a few hundred dollars.

Some day you probably will. I think they currently encapsulate things like baseballs.

I've seen so many "ancient Roman spear heads" in various listings online, but I've just seen the first that has a square socket rather than the usual round socket. Was there a specific point in time when square sockets began to be used, or a specific culture that preferred them?

I’m very happy to have acquired this new artifact, which I attribute to Naukratis c. late 7th to mid 6th century BC. It might be the earliest know Greek depiction of Acheloios, though it appears to be made in local style, unlike slightly later and larger Acheloios-shaped balsamarii from the temple of Aphrodite at Naukratis.

It is really magnificent to behold in hand. I absolutely love it!

Just received this lil beauty from across da pond from a British seller...with some snack additions to my Gallienus zoo series(soon to come).
I've never seen one like it. I suppose Bachofen would assume it's a mother goddess. But all of an ID I have is...

I don't get it, what are the two bags wrapped around the God's chest, with 3 ropes around his neck. Is that some sort of priest attire?

    Read, schmead. LOL

I didn't read the "mother goddess" part initially, either.

I just must be more attuned to noticing certain *ahem* anatomical details than you are, I guess. ;)

Well, I see what they are now, but I saw the patterns right above the anatomical region and assumed the whole thing was part of some elaborate ancient priest wardrobe.

In my defense, the head looks like it could be male.

Purchased from a UK antiquities dealer, this Gandhara stone head comes with a custom stand. Nice piece. Excellent item to put inside my display cabinet. I like the smiling face, with some sort of Zen feeling. Reminds me to cool down during tough times.

I also have another Gandhara stone carving. Base of a circular pillar, I believe. Need to display it someday. :shame:
