I was looking through my coin collection today, and wanted to ask how to prevent oxidation on coinage. I have a silver proof dime with a new black stain on it. However, I kept it in a closed container- and it was not possible for moisture or gas to penetrate. I also kept it clear of rubber bands. In what other ways could it have toned/oxidized? 2nd question: Would I encounter difficulty in attempting to sell a silver 1 sol coin for a significant sum on eBay? How hard would it be to find a buyer? The coin is rare, from a mintage of less than 100,000.
1) Desiccant/silica gel and/or airtites may help. 2) A coin with a mintage in the ten-thousands is not rare. Significant sum? Sorry, but I don’t think so.
As for the dime I cannot tell you what would stop the process once it starts....I will say be glad that it is a $5 Coin and easy replaced. I have coin mostly nickels that after being slabed carbon spots did surface and there's nothing can be done . As the spot can be lightened but will never go away. Question #2 World coins a mintage of 100,000 isn't rare far from it..... From the stand point of U.S. coins yes 100k is low..... but I say below 5K would be a low mintage depending on what country we are talking about. Think about it..... depending on what country a 3rd world country doesn't need high mintages as a world leader would. Your sol may or may not be in demand and would only sell if someone really wants it for their collection. And another point about rare coins consider they are only rare if in demand.... As look at nickels there are two Jeffersons matte proofs a 94 and a 97 that are extremely low mintages when talking nickels.....but the 97 with a mintage of only 25k can be obtained very reasonable priced.
Mike he said 100k which in my wheelhouse isn't no where a low mintage but above average for most countries.
It sounds like you have stored the coin in a good way. I'll guess the spots grew from something that was already on the coin before you got it.
Those prices are too high IMO. I sold one of these in AU a couple of years ago for slightly above spot price... @Legomaster1 show me one in gem BU with rainbow toning and I see a “significant” value.
Mic those prices were from a 2015 Krause world cat of coins. I never believe any published text as suck to be gospel the market changes way to fast to trust such a price guide.
