Some group pictures I took years ago of some of my early coppers. The color and definition are as good as I could achieve with my low-tech, hand-held camera. Unfortunately though, the coins around the periphery where more difficult to capture and they came out darker than in-hand. The background color obviously plays a big role. I like the brown background best. All in all there is evidently much room for improvement, but not too bad for an amateurish first trial. Has anyone taken group photos of your coins - how did they turn out?
No, I have not thought about a group photo, until now. BTW, nice assemblage. Edit: Have you tried a gray background with the white balance set prior to placement of the coins?
I tried a few with a black background, but they turned out really bad. I was not able to find a dark black, matte, non-reflective background so ended up using a type which was probably too reflective. This is something I should still try.
Is it OK on a Sunday to be a little jealous That looks like a real great collection, You have had to work pretty hard to build that collection In my opinion they look pretty good in a presentation case. Made of wood and velvet/felt
Group shots are not that great when everything is certified. I have some raw copper left, but bit it would not be much of a dispaly.
Really nice group. I have had good luck setting up the lighting, setting the white balance using a gray card and changing the background to dark blue before taking the image.
My group photo of coins from that era would consist of a couple of coins. Yours is amazing. I see lots of great coins in those groups.
My collecting favorites are big silver and early copper. Most of my collecting has come to a halt now I have kids. Four sons. I miss it, but they are far more blessing than burden. I am downright jealous of your collection! Yow! I am working on a Dansco 7070 Type Set. I have about 60 of the 76. The first pages are complete, with pretty high grade coins. Type sets are fun. You can acquire proof coins for the more common ones very cheaply. I do love high grade coins, and its possible to find mint state and proofs of most types, but at shocking prices. And you sure dont want your kids handling them. They end up in slabs, in a safety deposit box. Type Sets cover the entire US history, and are fascinating to kids. The old denominations, large sizes, and real copper and silver, not to mention gold. I have run into people who had never seen gold presidential and sacawagea dollars. A kid was arrested for trying to spend a $2 bill. Most people have never seen a silver coin. $2 bill, silver certificate, gold coin, Ike dollar, Kennedy half. Certainly not a large cent, half cent, silver dollar or ASE. Type sets enable you to cover the entire history of US coins, with fascinating detail. And by collecting specimens in the XF range, people can get the full value impression of the coin and its place in time, without destroying its value. Coins are made to be held. Well, waiting my turn at winning the lotto to start collecting again, unless anyone out there is motivated to send me coins and or money for free. Hehe. I need mostly the big silver to complete my set. Trade dollar, seated liberty, 20 cent piece, etc. Keep collecting everyone.
Thank you, buckeye73. Yes, I only recently joined EAC, although I have collected early US coins for the last 30+ years. EAC is a treasure trove of early copper knowledge. I wish I had joined sooner. I would not have them any other way.
I hate show offs....damn, that is really a great group of coppers. Seriously, a wonderful selection. I'm still an EAC/C4 member but have not collected early copper as my point of interest for the past twenty years or so. Sold all except a few c/stamped. I love real old coppers, Byzantine. Still have my early US and pre-Federal library. I also kept five NJ's and one Connecticut. Attached is another early token from my Provincial/Conder collection. Couldn't afford EAC stuff so made a switch. If that was an EAC piece just imagine the toll it would collect. It almost has peach fuzz. Makes me smile.
