    HELLO!

O.K., here's a coin I listed on eBay and a few people told me it was a fake. I normally deal with model trains and metal music on eBay and I really don't know anything about coins. That's why I joined here. I yanked the listing and decided to come here and learn a thing or two. As far as I know, this coin is from a yard sale or something like that. I don't know exactly. Please visit the cancelled eBay listing linked below:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=170283994404

If it is a fake, please tell me how you know this. Also, can many of you tell with 100% certainty that a given coin is fake without holding it in your hand or subjecting it to tests of some type. Also, how big of a problem are fake coins? Any information would be great. I'm just trying to learn! What exactly ARE these "Elephant Tokens" ? ? ? In case the auction link above stops working, here are my pictures. They aren't the best. I would prefer to scan them but I had to use a camera. THANKS for your time!

The piece has a cast look to it, the lettering is off.

It definitely looks cast to me. The fields and details have a very rough and porous look...that is a tell-tale sign of casting.

It does appear cast, from what I can see of an original, they were not cast.

Second, in VG condition a real one has a value of roughly $55,000 so not something likely to be purchased raw on eBay.

fake, but a good one that I sure wish that I had in my collection, I find counterfeits to be extremely interesting.

I would say fake as well, that looks like a hole in the copper plating exposing the base metal core. What does it weigh?

Welcome to the forum Albert! You have a definite fake with a big blob of WTH on it, good luck with that one! :D You can easily tell it's a fake by looking at the detail on the legs in comparison to the top part, I can go on and on about this one. I hope you didn't pay too much for it! Better luck next time. ;)

I have no way of knowing the weight but will try and use a food scale to see if I can get some kind of weight of it. Will get back to you. TY for responding.

Not my area, but in the comparison photo below (real, and yours) I would guess yours is not real.

Ty all for your responses. It was a gift to my wife when she was in her twenties some thirty years ago. She was told it was expensive but now I feel comfortable with your responses that it too is a fake. Again thank all of you for your expert input.
