Hello, all! I've started to get into coin collecting. I found these in a bin at a flea market along with some rubbish, bought it for $20. Are they worth anything? They look pretty nice, but some of them are really dirty. Should I clean them?
Don't clean them... at least not until you know what you're doing. They are worth at least melt, so yeah, for $20 you did well. The Morgans and Peace dollars are worth about $12 each, unless you have a rare date/mint mark... some of them look pretty nice (the experts will have to chime in on those). The half dollars are at about $5.60 (melt); I don't think they're anything special, but you never know.
And this interesting book. I haven't tried removing any of the coins yet. I bought it at silver weight price.
Not bad at all for 20 bucks. I see 2 Ikes in there with all the silver. I would be interested in seeing the reverses of both of those. Wondering if they may be Type 2s.
But if the coins are only dollar and quarter coins, that means I lost some money? Wouldn't they have lost value because of the rust?
The 2 1972 dollar coins behind all the others on the 1st picture. You may know nothing now, but you have some great pieces to start learning with.
Ohh ok, here's the back. Excuse my photography skills. I just googled "Ike" coins, but the one online look a lot nicer than mine!
The one you would want for the Ike is the Type 2. I'm pretty sure those aren't it. You can check out some close up pictures here: http://www.ikegroup.info/?page_id=184
I found my trusty jeweler's loupe that I use for fountain pens, here's a close up on the earth part on the back. From what I just googled, that's how you tell, right?
Oh, I also have this coin from an estate sale a while back. It's the same as the others, but it's a great deal shinier. There's a microscopic "D" below the eagle. Is that rare?
The Morgan and Peace dollars contain .77344 oz. each of silver; the Walkers and Franklin half dollars contain .36169 oz. each of silver. Buy the book! Do the math! NOTE: The Red Book is printed every year. Chris
Don't forget that the 64 Kennedy is also 90% and the 65-69 Kennedys are 40% silver. You did great for 20 bucks.
