Hi Everybody, New to posting- but long time reader and collector! I recently picked up a "coin collection" / "box of coins" / "Junk Box" at an estate sale recently, and found this coin in it- I believe it to be a 1928 Chinese Auto Dollar. https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide...dollar-y-428-171928-cuid-1045602-duid-1289044 From the weight, it seems correct; but I'm no expert on Chinese coins (or most international coins for that matter), and have read that this is a very counterfeited coin. Any thoughts or opinions you may be able to provide regarding this coin would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! -Jeremy
With that color, I expect that it is a fake. Looks like a lot of Chinese fakes I've seen. Also, yours is lacking the details of what an authentic coin would have too.
I'm no expert either, but you're correct that these coins are often faked. Hopefully somebody else more experienced will chime in.
that interesting that it is the correct weight for the coin 25.80 g. , size-39mm . hmmmm. China/Kweichow Province Y#428, 1928, Dollar , silver, mintage: 648,000 "Auto Dollar", from my 2004 edition Krause world coin catalog... grade/values VG8-$500 F12-$800 VF20-$2,500 XF40-$6,500 MS60-$17,500 not sure what your coins grade is or if it is real ?
Add me to the list of non-experts who say it doesn't look right. Eventually someone will come along who knows what they're talking about, but until then you just have a bunch of our instincts saying probably not.
Sorry for the slow response! I was able to test it with a magnet last night- it did not stick or even slightly move; perhaps it's silver, or even real? Pretty fascinating that it would be the same weight! Thanks! -Jeremy
OP don't get your hopes up. The chinese are making fake morgans and their own chinese coins in actual silver now as well.
