I'm Confused - eBay and PayPal

Looks like eBay figured out that their original idea of creating PayPal WAS a good idea.
Or at least that's what I think has happened.
Now they figure out that they sort of shot themselves in the foot when they sold off PayPal.
So eBay is going to reinvent the wheel.
And at the same time toss out a perfectly good wheel (PayPal).
Although if I understand correctly they may reinstate PayPal as a spare tire later this year.

I have acquired great confidence in PayPal.
I continue to have decreasing confidence in eBay.
eBay's reincarnation of a PayPal-like feature scares me.

Is there a problem going on with PayPal and eBay? I constantly use eBay and have no problem paying and receiving money with my PayPal account.

 

Ebay is dropping PayPal as their main payment processor and switching to a Dutch counterpart. PayPal will still be an option through at least 2023 for payment.

 

I don't buy a lot of stuff from ebay but I feel like that is a bad idea. Paypal is known, used, and trusted by a lot of people/businesses. Switching to a virtual unknown doesn't sound like a great business idea IMO.

 

PayPal was split off of eBay the the insistence of major investors. They realized eBay was holding back PayPals valuation and were right. eBay is attempting to get that market back

 

I sell a ton of stuff on Ebay. It is a side business for me and my wife. I'm not sure how confident I will be in just switching to another service if not provided good evidence that it will be a solid system.

 

Adyen is the company replacing PayPal.

 

This is what happens when people get paid big bucks to change things. Might have to rethink my eBay membership. Plenty of other fish in the pond.

 

If I can’t use PayPal on eBay, then I won’t use eBay. That’s how that old tune goes.

 

My understanding is that Paypal will be accepted, just not their preferred source of payment. I agree that I'd rather keep using Paypal and have no interest in signing up for another payment provider that no one else takes. I signed up for Paypal originally way back when specifically to use eBay. Unfortunately if you want to sell your coins and they're not auction house worthy you don't really have another choice. Yes, there are other auction sites but they have few buyers. I listed about 100 coins on Webstore a few weeks ago as a trial and haven't sold a single one. And they're the same type of coins I sell routinely on eBay.

 

And who are those fish you are talking about? Name a few...

 

Why lay out a hard-line position like that? If you give up buying on eBay, you'll be losing an avenue that gave you success and helped build your business.

 

I was one of Paypal's first customers back in the '90s, but I'd be open to alternative payment systems that do the same thing with lower fees. All the kids are using Venmo now (which is a bit scary because it makes your transactions public by default like some kind of d---d social media app). I remember using e-gold back in the day. Maybe something better will come along.

 

I don't have a horse in this race but eBay is claiming that the new system will be integrated seamlessly into the eBay web site. No more hopping over to the PayPal site to pay, then back to eBay to shop.

Of course, there are other reasons, but this is the most customer-facing one.

Most likely. It will have to be buyer driven which they have no incentive to make the switch. As a seller if the fees were lower it would be nice, but if no buyers are using it it wouldn't matter

 

So probably a little cheaper on really cheap items with the lower per transaction fee, but significantly more expensive on more expensive things.
