1964 D Lincoln Cent - story of the D's ?

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Michael Bromiley, Feb 26, 2019.

  1. I saw video on YouTube about the 1964 D penny. It mentioned that there seems to be two main locations for the D, one closer than the other. I a have noticed this quite a bit lately and was wandering what the story was ? --
Showing here are some 64's and then the comparison to a 61 and a 68

In 1964 mint marks were hand punched into the die which would account for the slight difference in placement compared to the date. The slight difference does not add or decrease the value of the coin.

Your first mistake was getting just part of the story from some idiot on BoobTube.

Listen to Chris and avoid you tube. While there are some very useful videos, most are filled with mistakes, misinformation and lies from a bunch of hacks just trying to get clicks. The problem for new collectors is figuring out which are good and which are junk (the video you reference is junk).

As referenced above, mm were stamped by hand on on each individual die until 1989 or 1990 (I always forget which) so they can be be in wide variety of locations, not just two

Mint mark placement can vary. Common.

  7. Thanks guys, I'll watch out for the videos - There are a couple I have been following. Do you know of any "good" ones on YouTube to follow ? ie. "coin ops" or "couch coins " ?

I usually don't bother with you tube because it's just not worth the effort to sort through the junk to find accurate information. I'm willing to bet that many (most?) of the experienced collectors on CT have a similar opinion.

That being said, videos by numismatic organizations such as the ANA, and major TPGs like PCGS and NGC are legit. They may not have the specific info you want, however. Also, videos by major dealers should be legit, but I don’t have any experience with them. The problem as a new collector, is knowing which dealers are knowledgeable and which are just hack wannabes that don’t know certain parts of their anatomy from a hole the ground when it comes to numismatics.
