    Hi everybody,

I just got my first 1990's silver proof quarter. How do you tell the difference from a clad quarter? They look the same to me.

    Thanks

Lay a clad quarter and a silver quarter both on the table side by side. Then cover them with an ordinary tissue. Then look, you'll see the difference ;)

Of course you could just look at the edge and see the copper on the clad coins.

Turn the coin on its side and look at it. If you see copper in the middle then you have a clad coin. If not and its all white metal. Your have Silver.

Most of the time yes, but not always. Sometimes the outer clad layer gets pushed down over the copper so you can't see it. That's when the tissue test comes into play.

Not something you want to do with proof coins, but there is always the ring test.

There's also more than 1/2 gram difference in weight. (The silver ones are heavier.)

I've never heard of the tissue test.

Thanks for the tip about the tissue test. That's pretty cool. What a difference. Who ever came up with that idea.
