i read and read and read and i cant find anywhere on here about this topic. I know that your not suppose to touch coins bare handed, or really with cloth gloves cause that can scratch a coin too, but what about rubber gloves or latex? is that acceptable or will that damage coins too? any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

    Hi Tommy,

I've been told by a few dealers that ANYTHING besides white, cotton gloves is bad. I could be wrong but I use those white, cotton gloves and still only handle the rims of coins.

Handle by the edges only. (The rims are not the same as the edges.)

Handle by the edges ONLY! And when I'm dealing with uncirculated coins, I usually use white cotton gloves, and work over a soft cloth surface just for added safety. Rubber and latex gloves are not reccommended. Not by me anyway...

By the way, welcome to cointalk!

I'm sure there is a chemical reason not to use rubber gloves that someone can provide. Personally, I just use clean hands. Cotton gloves make the coin difficult to handle [for me anyway].

Handle by the edges only, bare hands or gloved. Touching the surface of a coin can scratch, scuff, and do a lot of damage to the coin, no matter what you have on your hands. A question though that is better asked before done. :thumb:

Thanks Hobo as that is exactly what I meant. POOR choice of wording on my part.

always handle by the edges, if you want you can use cotton gloves. You can usually find a pair around the two dollar range.

You just have to know where to look Tommy - try here - Numismatic Resources - just scroll down a bit and you'll see a thread titled - Beginning Coin Collecting. Click on that and read away.

Afterwards of course I woyuld suggest that you spend more time reading the rest of the links you'll find there ;)

i try to be careful when handling coins. i try not to breathe on them or hold them other than by the edge, i don't smoke near them and all that.

now please tell me why i will find, from time to time, a coin that would grade a 67 and in beautiful shape? surely the people that handled it before me (store clerks, bank tellers, postal employees etc.) didn't wear any gloves or tried handling them from the edge or anything!

guess i got lucky time and again NO!?

Who knows they may have just cracked open a roll and you are the SECOND person to touch it.

Me too. If you use cotton gloves, you increase the chances of a coin slipping out and onto a floor. If you use cotton gloves you must remember to not let them absorb any types of solutions which they have a tendency to do. Some rubber gloves contain chemicals to make them more pliable like what is added to PVC. Latex gloves are great except I've had coins stick to them and then suddenly drop.
I've got to go along with washing your hands real well and holding the coins by the edges.
Or just stick some robber cement on the coins and pick them up with a stick.:p
