I was just trying to find something a bit more solid then that. Seems like they have gone down in price.

Point well taken, when you check e-bay, check the "Sold" listings.

    FWIW,1857 $20 Liberty AU-58's generally sell for around $6,000 I would venture, give-or-take.

The 1857-S's cost more I take it.

Wasn't aware that the 1857's were that cheap in AU-58.

Yeah, I was surprised too. There have been some weird price inversions in the gold and platinum market lately, driven largely by bullion prices moving out of step with collector interest & demand. I picked up an ef45 slabbed $10 gold piece for less than melt & have been scratching my head ever since.

    CDN says $3,000 for an AU58. $6,500 in MS60 and $18,000 in MS62.

Wow, I'm surprisedo_O the price jumps that much from AU-58 to MS-60. Oftentimes, AU-58's look better than the lower-60's on coins. Must be the general scarcity of Type 1 DE's others referenced here in regards to the SSCA horde.

I'll try and check generic 1857 completed sales for more info.

It's best to check sold listings on the bay, and several auction sites.

Very much agree, and you may find relative bargains this way ...particularly if you care more about coins than about grades. Which most of us claim to do.

The NGC graded pieces do not have the foil label. I take that those were the 8% or so that were awarded to other claimants. I have one, unfortunately. The coin is nice, but the PCGS slabbed ones are worth more.

The 1857 is a bit more expensive than the S, especially as it goes up in grades. I bought an S from the Newman collections in AU50 6 years ago for $2500. At one time, it would have been among the highest grades available. Then the Central America was discovered and super high grades are abundant in S.

Is it just me or does an "average" Liberty DE look more like true gold than a Saint DE ?

    Beautiful coin, JM.

JM, I'm not sure many people know that the NGC gradeds could be in original holders. They may not be aware that a small % of the coins were awarded to minority litigants and they chose to go with NGC.

The expectation among many is if you see SSCA coins in NGC holders that they are OVERGRADED from an original PCGS holder. Not necessarily the case, with either original holder or being overgraded.
