My experience at coin shows has been to buy it on the first pass......had too many of them not be there when I went back.
@BuffaloHunter You are so correct!! After the second time it happened to me I learned my lesson. 35 years ago I passed by a AU+ Trade dollar, still regretting my actions.
Some fun catches: Arrowheads for my boy. Not an ancients guy. But this was the most stunning depiction of Christ I had ever seen on a coin. I blame this one on a recent thread by @lordmarcovan . And these because I still like cheap fun stuff. Not an errors guy either but these war nickels have some very pronounced delaminations.
Looks like you got yourself a racketeer nickel. Wish I could have made it. One days drive each way for me but oh the fun. If you see a coin you want, remember it may be gone if you walk away and come back later. It may also be more difficult to negotiate a good deal. Have fun and enjoy yourself.
Lots of dealers in this auditorium. Everything from ultra high end guys to junk dealers. Thing I found disturbing was how many dealers were displaying cleaned, polished and whizzed coins. I mean.... I get it. They are in business to sell coins, good or bad. Thing is, I looked at one seated quarter that my initial impression was WOW. Then I took out my loup and saw the damage. I smiled and handed the coin back. Never once did the fellow try to be forthright with me about it...... I know it takes all kinds, but there are five dealers at that place that I’ll never do business with or recommend to anyone. Was just a bit disheartening to see.
Conisder me jealous on that acquisition of yours. My own intended Feuchtwanger purchase in that thread did not go through. Oh- nice Byzantine follis, too. You're right- that's a great portrait. Here's a full-length Christ portrait (rather stern looking) on a ca. 1372-1438 Ragusa grosso. (He's on the right- the other fella who looks like Tommy Chong putting up the peace sign is Saint Blasius.) This coin used to be part of my Eclectic Box collection but now resides in @dadams' collection. Medieval Croatia (Ragusa): silver grosso portraying St. Blasius and Christ, ca. 1372-1438 PCGS XF40- population 1- the only example certified as of early 2019. Obverse: S BLASIVS RAGVSII, Saint Blasius standing, facing, raising hands in benediction and holding crozier. Reverse: IC/XC, Christ standing facing, raising hand in benediction and holding Gospels.
As to the Spartanburg show, I wish I could attend- that's within my 300-mile travel radius- but presently I'd barely be able to scrape up the gas money, let alone any coin money! (And I'm on a self-imposed buying freeze for a while.)
This is a very common occurrence especially at smaller local/regional style shows. There's a number of people with tables at these venues that are selling details coins as problem free and/or who crack coins out of details slabs to do so
Thing is.... It’s like selling a car. It may be nice and shiny. But if the engine is using more oil than gas then the only honorable thing to do is to tell a potential buyer. A person has to sleep at night.
I laughed my kazoo off at your Tommy Chong comment. Not proud to say that I was a fan back in the day. And danged if that don’t look like him!..... Hey, open the door. It’s dave!!
Having to wrap this adventure up earlier than I wanted. Have a knee that needs replaced and the Tylenol ain’t touching it after a day and a half on that concrete floor. Today was kids day and I was tickled to give out maybe twenty buffalo nickels to some happy kids. Final take for the day is below. Forgive the photo. Best I could do on my truck console. Photo doesn’t show it but the 1883 nickel has a knock out gorgeous blue hue to it.
Sorry to hear about your knee. I know exactly what you are feeling. I had my knee replaced about 10 or so years ago. Still can't use it correctly due to scar tissue inside but I can walk. I was bone on bone and put it off until after my sister passed away from cancer. It was worth the pain I still feel today. Randy, get your knee taken care of, it will be well worth it. You got some great looking coins there! I'm sure we'll see better photos soon. That was great of you to pass out Buffalo Nickels to some kids.
I appreciate that. My doc is ready for me to say go. I just can’t make it OK in my head to be away from my office that long. And my friends that have been through it still limp. So I just don’t know if it’s worth it...... Anyway, I had two nice purchases I rather wanted to try to make today. With my brain all fogged up with knee pain I chose to not try to make those deals. Should have done them yesterday when I was in a better state. Oh well..... I have a calendar of upcoming shows!
I set aside everything to be with my sister. I don't regret it for a moment. I even changed my surgery date, postponing it until the end had come. 2 days before my surgery my knee collapsed. I mean it failed to support me when I was walking. It made things worse. I have no cartilage in my knee. What little was left was ground down to remove the rough edges. I can't run, ride a bicycle or hike. There's lots of things I can't do anymore. Other things, I can do but I do them differently. I can't tell you how important this surgery is but it will make a difference in your life. It took me over 8 months to recover but it's so much better than it was. Whatever is wrong with your knee will not go away by itself. Basically, it's worn out and the more you use it the more pain you will endure and the longer you will have that pain. It will deteriorate a little more with each passing day. Ask yourself, is a limp better than what you have now? The office will be fine while you are away. They can get in touch with you a phone or by email. Only your mobility is affected, not your brain. Yes, it's a difficult surgery, it takes time to recover and you're dependent on others but in the long run it's worth it. I wish you the best and will add you to my prayer list my friend.
Some nice pick ups at the show, Randy. Bummer you had to cut it short. I like the looks of that shield nickel. Would like to see some better pics of that one.
I appreciate that. Actually the shield nickel was a pacifier. The shield nickel I wanted was a proof 65 that I had intended on negotiating on Sunday. My leg hurt so badly I chose to just buy the low grade nickel and go home. But man I wanted that proof. It was sweet. Here’s better photos. I was really stricken by the toning on the V-nickel. Both are quite common. But the V just grabbed me.
Very nice Coins Randy. It was best not to negotiate with the pain you had. Pain can really through you off and nothing cuts knee pain, not even prescribed drugs.
