I am not sure what happened to all the contestants that signed up?? 25 in all

Element #3 is in progress and up to this time point only 6 people of 25 have sent in responses to the Elements.

Of those 6 only 1 as provided answers to all 3 elements.

Three (3) have provided answers to 2 Elements

Two (2) has provided answers to Element 1 only.

Was the Contest not what you expected? Where did it go wrong?
How could I have done better?

I thought the addition of 2 extra bonus prizes was stimulating enough?
    Was it to difficult?
    Was it too boring?
Were you not willing to put the time in?
Could you not afford to put the time in?

I am really curious to what happened.

At this point in time no one has provided all the correct answers. I am a little shocked.

I will open the Bonus question's to any who want to respond, correct answers with first time stamp wins it. The 1924 Peace dollar will still be awarded
The $2 note will now be a Star note or your choice of the NY Note mentioned.!

the last one was hard. the bonus questions, especially the one for the peace dollar i couldnt make any sense of. it was hard for me.

i only got a few of the answers for element 3 but i dont have them all so its the same as turning in wrong answers which keeps me from winning.

and i wasnt even around to do the first one and when i got home the answers were already up.

Rickie, I am really sorry about not making it for the contest, I wish I could have participated, but I not only got busy over the weekend with company, but I also got sick a few days ago, went to a Christian concert last night, it just got totally busy. If I could've, I really would have tried to participate. I'm sorry man! Don't let it discourage you though, not everyone likes to participate, or can't participate really. I was expecting a bit more people to try out for the Mods vs Member's contest, but spock and GD really help make it worthwhile, along with all the other members that are doing it so far. Again, I am sorry, and I will try again to be there for you for support in the future. :thumb:

what i found was all the notes mentioned by number all had the letter a. this letter is a positioning indicator. it is to the left of colby's signature.

and i got the peace dollar! woohoo!

    Right answers SmokeMonkey...

The letter "A" is a positioning indicator for the first note positioned on the sheet.
There are 12 notes printed per page and the flow goes like this,
3 vertical rows with four horizontal rows 12 note s in all.
The first vertical row of 4 notes are marked with the "A"
Rows 2 and 3 (4 notes each) have no "A"
The "A" note are much rarer than the "non A notes" by 66%

The "A is positioned to the left of the signature .

There is also a larger A positioned under the signature but that is a different variety.

I don't know about the rest of the contestants, but I really enjoyed the questions. I sat down and spent time looking up the answers and think I got the majority of them correct (I hope...hopefully you aren't laughing at my responses...and if so, I'm glad you enjoyed them ;) ). I thought it was really interesting. For example, I remember the Hunley being raised and that particular event back in 2001, I thought it was really interesting. However, I had never heard of the gold coin or the story behind it. So, that was really interesting for me to learn being someone who is interested in American history and a coin collector.

I'll admit, the third part was the hardest for me. I had to spend quite a bit of time with it, but the "hunt" for answers was part of the fun.

The bonus questions (especially the Peace Dollar) were really hard. With that one, I didn't even know where to begin. I spent some time on Bonus #2 but couldn't come up with anything (although, you have now sparked my interest in Fractional Currency...I don't know if I should thank you or curse you for opening up another area of a rather resource draining and fun hobby-lol).

I personally really enjoyed this contest, its probably been my favorite of those that I have participated in. Rickie, you sound disappointed in it...and I hope that you're not, because it has been really enjoyable.

Was this kind of the governments answer to the issuance of hard times tokens? I know that around this time many private individuals began making their own coins (typically copper) for circulation since US coins had been hoarded.

Yes as the last sentence of paragraph 2 mentions...

    Cool huh??

I didn't see that it said tokens in there. When I read that, I was thinking that it mainly protected from private paper currency that may not be backed by anything. With a copper token, its still copper.

That is an interesting part of history, I can't imagine living in a time when there was such seemingly little faith in the circulating currency. I think I'm going to start doing some research into the topic and maybe I'll expand my currency collection beyond small size notes. I'm going to have to look into some books about the topic. Over the last 6 months, I have really expanded my interest into paper currency and I'm finding it a lot of fun.

What happened is, that for the past two days, cointalk has not worked for me. I keep getting a DNS error every time I try to access this site. I'm wondering whether more people have this problem. If anyone is wondering, I am browsing via a SLOW proxy server which channels cointalk through.

i am SO very sorry RickeiB!

this weekend has had an over abundance of surprises for me and my family! I cant go into details yet, but sufice to say it has keept me occupied for the ebst part of the weekend!

I did very much wish to participate int he contest, but i will have to be a force to reckon with - on the next contest :p

I have looked at the questions, and read alot of the answers - you did an EXCELLENT job RickieB, you shoud be awarded a prize for the creative process that went into it all. I am sure it took alot of work on your part, and in the end, your the one given the prizes away. It is very nice of you!

Finally after about a six pack of Pepsi and chewing Advil like candy so the headache would go away I think I finally finished element three. It is by far the hardest one of the three. After I say clarification that it was not the best paper money museum I got it I think. I enjoyed the contest with everything that goes one on Sunday I wasn't able to get to the extra questions. I learned a lot in the first two elements. I was telling my wife about the new trivia and she recommends that I get some professional help. I'm too envolved. Thanks RickeiB, I can only imagine what it took to get the contest up and going, good luck finding the winner.

    Hello Everyone...
I know my starter post sounds as though I was dissapointed, perhaps in a small way.
I can say that the effort that was given by those who did participate was outstanding. Heck, I think we have even enlisted a few more Paper Money collectors which was the whole Idea anyway.

Please do not feel as though you need to apoligize, it is not required, however, I appreciate the remarks.

I think most of you who worked on this have a new insight on Paper Money as a collectable and a new appreciation of what the histroy of Paper Money has bestowed upon our Country.
I chose the Civil War Era as I find it most interesting and the fact the last two books I have read recently were on Abraham Lincoln, the Assination, the Manhunt, the trials and punishments and Reconstruction.

Deep stuff...very deep stuff. I wish I had paid closer attention when I was a kid in school!

I have enjoyed putting this together and the effort was minimal...it was devised and composed in 2 days and I just wanted to kick it off on my Birthday, and cover a three day period where notes were issued and Presidents honored. It was really a Presidents Day Contest for Abarham Lincoln. The only thing aboutthe prizes was I could not part with any of my $5 Lincolon notes..LOL therefore the Cleveland note and silver certs!
Some of the notes of the 4th issue fractional currency actually ended on Feb 15, 1876 and one of them the 4th issue 10 cent note was issued July 14, 1869 and ended Feb 16, 1875.

Fractional currency is the only currency of the 19th century which remains still a Legal Currency and have never been demonetized!
    Regards to all...

    Hi RickieB,

I also feel bad. I thought the site was down all weekend - I really was feeling bad thinking that you were not able to run your contest! I could get to every site but this one on multiple PC's at home. The guy at comcast said it could take up to three days to get it fixed .

Belated Happy Birthday - I saw it posted over on coinpeople.

I look forward to reading all that went on with the contest - I have won enough lately that it's probably better to share the wealth. Thanks for hosting it!

Congrats to Smoke Monkey!!! I'm sure the prize will be amazing.

    Best Regards

    Darryl

i tried to do the bonus question for the 2 dollar bill but i just couldnt find all the info. i AM glad to see the answers i did have were correct. maybe i should have just turned in a partial response, would have beat no response. oh well!

and this will be my first peace dollar. i bought one and some other silver coins off of DJPx02 but his is polished and i only bought it for the melt value. this will be my first numismatic peace dollar though and that makes this even more special. especially since i didnt think i was going to win anything.

thanks for the contest and the many prizes you offered in it.
