Hi guys, I am quite all new to this - I am seeking to buy a genuine Morgan Dollar as a gift and I am looking for a specific date - 1899. Would you have some general recommendations on how to avoid fake coins and what to look out for please? I found this coin here for example - can you tell from the provided photos, if it is genuine or not? https://www.etsy.com/listing/676999625/1899-s-morgan-silver-dollar-coin Thanks in advance for any tips! Vlk
I'm not sure, looks a little off. Here is a certified coin. Only slightly more. Otherwise others will chime in. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/223375010100
Don’t buy the Etsy coin, it has various problems. I’d get a certified and problem-free example just like LuxUnit suggested...
Thank you! It looked a bit off for some reason.. So the one on the link you've posted should be genuine? I suppose certificate cannot be fake?
ANACS, PCGS, and NGC are very reputable companies. Its worth it to spend a little extra to have one certified. Just make sure the label doesnt say cleaned or scratched or something along that line. Feel free to message me if you have more questions
Thank you very much, I really appreciate the insight! I really like the coin you’ve linked, so I might as well go for it! Cheers!
Just don’t buy from etsy period. 99% of listings are overpriced/shady. You’d honestly have more luck on ebay, which itself is abundant with scams and counterfeits. Try Vcoins.
If you're looking for an 1899-dated Morgan dollar, buy an uncirculated 1899-O, as it is a common date. 1899 and 1899-S are better dates that will cost you more.
I agree with messydesk. Here's a nice one. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/202582118717
I have to give that seller a little credit. It looks genuine and the seller correctly called it Fine details due to the rim damage.
Thank you guys! I am not much into uncirculated ones, I like the patina and story behind the used ones, so I think I will go for this one posted by LuxUnit: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223375010100?ul_noapp=true It's an S one and is even cheaper than the uncirculated one.
Why would you buy a VG8? I’d suggest to buy a higher grade coin, somewhere in the VF range. E.g. on eBay you could search with below string: 1899 O morgan vf (anacs, icg, pcgs, ngc) (30,35) -details
You are right.. I've looked for more certified coins and found that one that looks much better. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1899-S-Mor...h=item33f6d3c0fa:g:8A0AAOSwgbdcSilp:rk:3:pf:0
Which advice? I've said that I am looking for a worn looking coin, I am not aiming to get a shining uncirculated one. And I am not a collector, so I am aiming to get just a nice looking and genuine morgan dollar coin, it doesn't have to be in rare condition or fancy version of it. I just noticed the filter you've posted for eBay, thanks for that!
Micbraun is referring to this coin: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-5...h=item33f6d3c0fa:g:8A0AAOSwgbdcSilp:rk:3:pf:0 It is cleaned which is a bad thing for a coin collector. Give those searches a try and if you find something post it here, most people are willing to give advice if you have questions happy hunting
Understood. I would not buy certified coins with a “details” grade. You want to buy a slabbed coin to be sure it’s authentic and it doesn’t have any major issues. I suggested to search for VF 30/35 coins, as those usually have good eye-appeal but aren’t too expensive either. A nice looking VF30/35 coin is usually an excellent choice.
Thank you very much for your help guys, I really appreciate it! May I ask why is the cleaned coin a bad thing? I looses it’s original patina? If that would be the case, I don’t mind, I really aim for genuinity and look. However, I gave the VF 30/35 a look and haven’t found any coin that I would like and be within my price range. There were couple of nice ones but without a certificate. I am looking for the S more than the O, which might narrow my options as well. However, I found this coin which I like and is not cleaned, it is certified and has VG 10 rating. It’s far from VF 30/35, I know, but it works for me visually - there are enough details and I like the wear. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1899-S-1-A...448880&hash=item5463f39b77:g:xJcAAOSw6-tbvSIZ
If you are not a collector - what is your specific purpose for the coin (jewelry piece or something)? You are seeking advice from a group of people with a collector's mindset. If your purpose for the coin is something different - providing that specific information would be helpful so we can change our perspective and guide you in the best direction.
