1964 JFK halves work for me - they generally have the least wear so buy as low as possible, get more metal for the money
Just a reminder - based on numismatic experts opinions - it's really dumb to use any non-rare coins for investment purposes. If you go back 20 years, you will find that most non-rare coins have not appreciated as fast as inflation. Truly rare coins are worth the investment since they historically do appreciate much faster than inflation. Again, do not invest in any non-rare coins, especially St. Gauden's or Morgans! You're wasting your money.
First of all, do not under any circumstances invest in non-rare coins. Several numismatic experts have written about this based on mostly all non-rare coins appreciation not keeping up with inflation. Not to mention fluctuations over those years. Truly rare coins are keeping ahead of inflation. Do not under any temptation invest in Morgans or St. Gaudens coins. Beautiful coins and a rich history if that is your intention, but if you're looking to have them appreciate ahead of inflation you're just whistling in the dark!
As I sort these coins out, for common dates, at what grade and below would you consider junk status? For Franklin halves for example, if the grade is vf, is it considered junk silver or is there numismatic value?
There are so many Franklins out there, especially in uncirculated condition, that most worn common Franklins are good only for the silver content.
Same with the quarters and dimes - if they're common dates and strikes, just worth their silver content.
At what grade are Walkers and mercury dimes considered as “junk”? I am trying to determine what I want to keep numismatically vs. what is considered junk. Any thoughts?
I used to collect 1 oz. bars, rounds, ect. Then I got crazy /w certified silver eagles Pr. Ms. Sp. 70"s sets. Now for 2 yrs. mostly Lots of 20 1964 Kennedy halves & usually are almost lightly circulated. seems like they are getting harder and harder to buy @ little over melt, also silver eagle's Bu. I think silver $1 coins are just a good investment over paper money . Dollar cost average over the years, sell when cash is needed or hand down, (silver will advance, once the banksters & bank cartels retreat.
Agree with longshot - XF and better are worth setting aside - on the Mercs, look for strong vertical lines and diagonal bands on the fasces (reverse): On The Walkers, look for strong vertical parallel skirt lines on lady Liberty (obverse) Keep all key dates, regardless of condition
Thanks for your feedback as I sort out this stuff.. I kept the Franklins at AU and above. There was a 1949d in there but it no better than a VF grade, so I placed it in the junk pile. I kept the nice walkers at vf and above. I will provide photos of those that I kept
I have been hoarding 90% silver coins for many years. I have been paying 12X face in recent months. I do not like to buy rolls. I like to hand pick the coins at a local B&M, or a coin show. Even though they are just bullion, I like attractive coins that have not been cleaned or banged up. Although the later dated coins have less silver wear, I prefer purchasing the old Barbers, Standing Liberty, Walkers and Mercs.
Thanks for posting. Please post any photos you may have of your coins. We're all interested to see them. I want to Thank You for joining and say Welcome to Coin Talk !!
Believe it or not, I still have to learn how to post photos. As soon as I learn, I will post pictures. Sorry about that, and thank you for the welcome!
Well ten months later, and I know how to post pics now. Anywho, here is some recently handpicked junk silver that I got from my LCS.
