Hi everybody. I have been reading these boards for the fast few days and am a new collector. Just curious what you guys think about SGS coin grading. Obviously PCGS and NGC are the more popular services, but is SGS anything respectable? It seems that they give out 70's to every new coin, which seems extremely generous. Just so you know, I am getting this point of view from what I see on ebay. Again, I am a new collector and am trying to learn more about this hobby. Any information is greatly appreciated. Mike
Welcome to the forum and the answer is. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! They suck. Self slabber that blatantly over grades CONSTANTLY! Punch SGS into a CoinTalk search and you'll see. PLEASE DO NOT BUY SGS COINS! Was that clear enough? clembo
How do I change the thread display so that the replies are at the bottom of the page when the topic is clicked? Display: Hybrid mode?
If you want slabbed coins, stick with respected Third Party Graders (TPGs.) (I say "if" because you'll find people on both sides of that argument. But that's not your question.) Don't buy slabbed coins for the grade. Learn to do your own grading. The reason to buy slabbed coins is to know the coin is real (authentication) and to know it hasn't been tampered with (cleaned.) To that end stick with the following TPGs: PCGS NGC ICG ANACS NCS (coins that have been "conserved", not "cleaned". A whole 'nother debate there.) TPGs whose grading may be a bit shaky, but are legit: SEGS PCI ICCS (well respected Canadian grader)
SGS is a joke. They'll grade anything MS70 - STAY AWAY. Like kanga said... stick to the top four: PCGS, NGC, ICG, ANACS. eBay won't even let you list any others as "certified" unless by one of these four TPGs.
Mike: Believe it or not, Clembo's reaction is fairly moderate, compared to some opinions around here.
Near the top of the page on the left hand side click on User CP. Then go over on the left hand side again and click on Edit Options. Alittle more than half way down that page you will see where you can change that detail. Speedy
Mike, let's put it this way..... I live about an hour from the SGS base of operations. The coin dealers I've spoke to in that area said that they are suprised that the owner of SGS hasn't been shot, yet. I havn't delt with the guy, but I've never heard a GOOD opinion about their service. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Some of the NCS coins are "conserved". Many are simply problem coins which would otherwise not make it into a holder. This is the brother company of NGC, which does not encapsulate problem coins.
Yes, they are very respectful! Respectfully bad. Don't buy from them, whatever you do. ("Big Deep Radio anouncer type voice") AND THE DAY IS SAVED ONCE AGAIN, THANKS TO THE COINTALK MEMBERS!!! :high5: :high5: Phoenix
Thanks for the quality responses. Ill use the 2007 presidential dollar proofs for example. On ebay you can buy the 4 coin set that is from the mint for roughly 20 bucks. I see SGS selling the same 4 coins that are supposedly PR70 for around 40 bucks. I bet all they did was throw the same exact coins into their slabs and slap a PR70 on it. People just seem to be buying these things blind.
Not sure where but recently someone made a link to a place where they listed 107 TPG services. They are poping up almost as fast as coin books. You have to be carefull. At a coin show a dealer showed me a slabbed coin that was from a very popular TPG service. The slab stated a cent as MS something and a date in the 1890 area. Can't remember all the details but the coin inside was a modern Lincoln Cent, all beat up and even dented. That dealer did that for a joke and I could not tell where or how he opened it. So be carefull of anything you buy and trust because it is in a slab.
Gnatman, Actually, it's the BLIND that are doing the grading. It's the newbie's that are getting taken by (SGS) and the additional crooks who buy these things to resell them to other unsuspecting and uneducated buyers. I am just glad collectors like you come to just one of the internet sites to ask questions and learn about the shady practices of these Self Grading Slabbers (SGS). Here's my favorite reasons why the Self Grading Slabber (SGS) is truly blind. The grader couldn't even SEE the "RENO, NV" on the token! Other examples HERE ALSO REMEMBER SGS STAR GRADING SERVICE = ABONCOM = ABON.COM ALL ARE ONE AND THE SAME PERSON :loud: The PROOF is searchable right here on CoinTalk.org
lol, wow. Some of those slabs are pretty messed up. Apparently, they will just throw coins into slabs that look close to the real thing. again, wow.
Gnatman, Just look at "aboncom" negative & neutral feedback and read the comments regarding their grading... HERE What surprises me most is that the negatives and neutrals do not cliimb more rapidly as most are fearful of aboncom retaliatory NEGATIVE feedbacks for just giving a neutral. Don't forget to read how many times they refer to their buyers as "girl" when they know that it is not the true gender of their buyer. What the purpose is for doing that defies logic? I like girls and most are very smart. Kiss It's the dealers like HIM that gives us men bad reps! :headbang:
