So much for USPS’ most secure mailing service...

I bought this back in october, so I should have received in in November. In the USPS’ system, it was treated as Registered Mail. After two months of bouncing around New York, many calls to USPS, and two inquiries, it fell off the radar on January 12. USPS said they contacted me regarding closing out the inquiry, but I never received such a communication (it could have been one of the NUMEROUS spam robo calls that I have chosen to ignore, but no messages were left; nothing was ever received from USPS in the mail). I know the address was correct on the package because a USPS international services agent read off the address 100% correctly.

This is the coin in the package. The 90 days have expired for a PayPal/eBay claim. I will chalk it up as a loss due to USPS’ apparent incompetence with their most safe and secure mailing service...

I was really excited to get this one because it was a great price and an excellent strike for the type. :(

These screenshots were taken on January 7th. The “Regional Facility” was the same New York one each time.

The USPS delay is a bummer. It happens. I don't understand the rest though. What is the coin? Is it not what you expected? Was the wrong coin shipped or is there some other problem with the coin? You forgot to tell us the coin's attribution.

Looks like a coin from Metz? If so, nice coin and shame it's MIA.

I'm curious about your description "treated as Registered Mail." It's either registered mail, or not registered mail -- there's no "sort of registered mail."

If the package was truly USPS registered mail, the USPS is required to provide proof of delivery, or proof of attempted delivery, according to their website:

If you did not receive it personally, or the USPS cannot prove they attempted to deliver it, it's not your loss. You should be able to get your purchase amount back from the seller and let the seller hassle with the USPS.

I detest using USPS at all. I had a similar experience. I filed the claim, the buyer made it good (after a boatload of negative feedback I generated) and six months later (literally), it shows up. It got 'lost' somewhere and reappeared long after I had any hopes of it ever showing up.

It is a denier from Metz. USPS lost it despite it being a registered package.

Tracked packages from western Europe are usually treated as Registered Mail in my experience.

Just curious. Is it possible for lost packages to find their way to the buyer years later?

Ohhhh. I misunderstood-- I thought you had finally received it.

It still may show up some day. Fingers crossed!

Not sure about years but I've had one or two packages arrive many months later, with no resumption of tracking activity or anything. They just... showed up.

I was curious about this so I went to the USPS website to try to learn about tracking packages.

It's one of the most confusing websites I've ever seen, but my brief impression is that USPS provides tracking numbers with many of its services, not just registered mail. So just because a package has a tracking number doesn't mean it's registered or that delivery is guaranteed.

I wonder if non-U.S. packages that are mailed to the U.S. can actually be USPS registered mail? Does anyone know the answer?

They are for me 90% of the time. I’ve purchased hundreds of individual coins from Europe, and almost every one that was tracked was treated by USPS as if it were domestic Registered Mail.

Sellers ought to give steep discounts if they're shipping USPS. I hate them (USPS).

So does that mean, when the coin was delivered to you, that you had to sign a receipt or acknowledgement that the package was delivered? Because that's the specific service offered by USPS's "registered mail" service.

The US Virgin Islands postal service is the US Postal Service and I think they have the same basic mail handling procedures as the mainland. Every USPS employee who handles the Registered mail during its transport has to log the encounter. Deliveries must be signed for.

Yup, and when I pick it up from the PO, they have to remove the package from a locked cabinet.

So apparently the answer is yes, overseas shippers who use their country's
postal service CAN send a coin via USPS registered mail when it reaches the U.S. mail system.

That being the case, I would ask for a refund on the purchase since you never received the coin. The shipper is the entity with whom the USPS entered into the service agreement (i.e., registered mail) and I'm pretty sure it's the shipper's liability, not yours, if the coin doesn't show up.

International Registered Mail is treated as First Class Mail once it reaches the US. It is not treated the same as US domestic Registered Mail.

Well, if this is correct, then it would explain why it's NOT USPS registered mail. It would be tracked once it gets into the USPS system, but not necessarily sent as registered mail so it doesn't have the same level of service and guarantees.

Anyone out there work for the USPS and can clarify?
