A collector lost his home due to the Paradise Fire in california. His collection was stored in a fireproof safe, but all of his slabs were melted and destroyed due to the heat. NGC reached out to him and replaced the slabs for him, free of charge!

Story and pics can be found here:

This is a testament to the protection value of slabs.

The collector also has a fine eye for buffalo nickels.

    Excellent PR move by NGC.

PCGS and NGC both did that for him. I'm still amazed his safe and the slabs held up as well as they did. Very nice move by both companies to try and help him out. If I'm not mistaken the CU forum also did a GoFundme for the poor guy right after it happened.

Joe is a really cool guy. We got to chat at the Fun show. He joined a small party a few of us over on CU had. What he went thru has just crazy.

I'm amazed that the gaskets melted around the coins, encasing them fully, like in a mold, and still the coins were able to be removed and restored perfectly. Incredible!

What a cool touch to add his pedigree to the slabs. Tip of the cap to the folks at NGC.

I wonder if the coins will tone later on in the new holders.

Correct. Over $12,000 was raised for him. Classy move by the TPGs here. He was legitimately concerned that looters would get to his safe, which was clearly visible in the debris, before he was allowed back in.

Tip of the hat to the TPGs! It would also not be bad publicity for the manufacturer of the safe if we knew who made it.

A wise PR move on their end. I wish I had more photos of the coins out of the slabs, pre conservation to see how drastic the changes were (or weren’t).

Living in the middle of a National Forest, fire has always been my major concern. I too have a fire safe with, I believe, a 5 hour rating and wonder how my collection would fair. Good to know that some TPG services would be that helpful and I'm happy for Joe that he got his collection back.

No, they would not be that helpful all the time. This was a PR stunt/opportunity for them. Bring them a melted slab and they’re going to ring you up.

There was no stunt, they were helping out someone who lost everything and very different circumstances then someone showing up with a melted slab.

    Disagree :)

So I supposed you could provide all the links to the companies running around marketing and bragging about this "stunt" then since you claim it was just a PR move?

For once I agree with baseball. That should say something.

Imagine having a 20-minute warning that you were about to lose everything, and there was nothing you could do about it. And then imagine being stuck on a road praying that the smoke does not shut off your engine and get consumed by the fire. And then imagine having to wait a month to check on your collection. These circumstances are different and more horrific than just about any way a slab could become melted. PCGS and NGC offering to reslab the coins for free is an excellent use of their skills and resources to make a difference in the life of someone who survived such a devastating forest fire.

They don’t have to, everyone is doing it for them. Don’t be ridiculous in assuming your opinion is any more supportable than mine, or that your silly request could somehow going to “prove” either of us “correct”. I’m okay with agreeing to disagree.

Yes, this crazy story is exactly why it would be perfect for them to do this. I wonder how many house fires melt slabs that don’t get this same special treatment. Anyway, I’m fine with disagreeing with you. We are only arguing opinions anyway.

Again, completely different circumstance. It also helped that Crazyhounddog was a very active member on the PCGS boards.

Good deeds can benefit all sides. Getting credit for charitable actions doesn't diminish the act IMO. I'm not a member of the CU forum, so I wouldn't have known this story if NGC hadn't made the video. It was neat to see. Spreading a little hope can inspire others to do the same.
