I could use some extra eyes on this. It appears that the D Mint Mart is stamped over something else. A little feedback please.
Check it out and see if it matches any on the known RPM's. http://www.varietyvista.com/02a LC RPMs Vol 1/RPMs 1944D.htm
I believe it is from a die chip in the hand punch they used to add the mint mark to the obverse die. The date appears to be damage from aged dies also, IMO. Jim
Thanks for looking. There appears to be something inside the D that might be a continuation of the top left indication.
I'd like to resurrect this thread and ask the experts to look a little closer. I don't see how a die chip could account for the continuation of the upper left mark in a line under and inside the mint mark. Thanks.
It's not a die chip. It's a contact mark on the D Look at the 1, 9, and 4 - all with similar hits/marks. (and in the lower right area of the bust) Not a D/S, not an RPM - just contact marks.....sorry.
Thanks Fred I see all those hits. However, can that same process account for the material inside the D that appears to be a continuation of the upper left hit, assuming that one hit did it?
You should take a toothpick and see if you can get rid of the black 'gunk' inside the D so that you and we can see it clearer..... maybe it is, but inside the D has to be cleaner.
