The seller could get a buyer if he would mention that there may be a quarter eagle in the jar.

Or, better yet, slip in a cheap gold-plated copy of one -- then pepper the listing with "as is", "no returns", "seller will be leaving for Tahiti and won't be available to answer questions", and so on. I remember almost being taken in by a listing like that years ago when I was first getting back into the hobby.

    You're not the only one.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure eBay's current prohibition on copy coins (even marked ones) would give you a bulletproof Buyer Protection case -- assuming you knew to open one.

You should probably try acetone. It seems to clean everything. Or you could dip the jar. Whatever you do, maybe you should start a new thread on cleaning pickle jars.

When I think of "pickle smell", I think of vinegar. Have you tried soaking with baking soda?

I can't imagine the glass would retain an odor, but the gasket on the lid certainly would.

Drink sweet tea out of it for a while and the smell goes away.

A person in America has every right to sell any legal item for as much as they want to, so long as the listing does not contain misleading or false information, trick photography, false endorsements, etc., and as long as a person can return the item with a full refund if it is determined to be misleading or false.

I can sell a normal dollar for $1,000,000,000,000,000.00 if I want to and say that "it is the only one with this serial number!" That says nothing about the state of humanity or morality.

Though some won't like it, buyers have the right to be stupid.

That pickle jar appears to be full of pickle juice or something - copper cents would be ruined by that stuff - also, that is apparently the seller's first eBay item (all of his perfect feedback is as a buyer), so a red flag goes up for insufficient seller feedback - if you're willing to pick up locally (about 100 mi. north of Pittsburgh PA), make an offer (which is an option) based on your calculations and desire for submerged cents - you could also roll the dice, pay full price and hope for a 1955 doubled die or two in there - your move

at least if you make a sandwich out of them they'll have the taste of a pickle :vomit:, although the crunch might not yet be there. :wideyed:

Don't use acetone to clean the smell out of food jars like pickles and peanut butter. I had some coins soaking in a very clean peanut butter jar and it softened and eventually melted the seals. The problem with the smell is that it is either dissolved into or adhered onto the seal of the lid. Household ammonia works fairly well, but just leaving it very clean and open to the air for a few months allows most of the odor to evaporate.

What you do is put the copy quarter eagle in the jar with the cents in such a way that it is up against the side of the jar and can be seen in the picture but not clearly. Say over to the side where you can tell it is a quarter eagle but you can't really make out the details. And then NEVER mention it. You are selling a jar of CENTS. But people will see the quarter eagle, think you missed it since you never mentioned it, and bid the auction up in order to get it and "profit at your expense". Then when they get it and find the quarter eagle is fake if they try to do a buyer protection on the grounds that it is a fake, well you weren't selling a quarter eagle you were selling a jar of cents and that's what they got, you never said anything about a quarter eagle..

I've actually seen this done years ago.

And add that the coins were from an old lady in Buffalo that worked her whole life at a bank and cherry picked any old coins that came to the bank.

I know! I know!!! AUNT PENNY'S PICKLED PENNIES!! All day and night throat lozenges with metallic pickle flavor :inpain: to help people break the cigarette habit. When the pickle flavor runs out, just toss the "lozenges" back into the jar o' penny pickling juice! :)

They still sold you an item that's banned by eBay policy, though, regardless of how they described (or didn't mention) it. Once I had that foot in the door, I wouldn't let up until I got a refund.

Selling a jar of cents is banned on ebay? That's what I sold. If there was something else extra in the jar then they got a free bonus. I never sold an unmarked fake quarter eagle. :)

Reminds me of the problems Charlie Davis used to have. He is a numismatic literature dealer and he was selling auction catalogs from major sales. He would have several pictures of the catalogs including some of the contents. He kept getting complaints filed against him because "all they got was the catalog and none of the coins pictured in the listing". I don't think he ever had to refund.
