Not sure how many collectors of these coins are also into the Apollo Space Program but if you are and you haven't seen it, there's a great documentary (probably my favorite on the subject) called "In the Shadow of the Moon" You can see the trailer on YouTube
As much as I don't like how they handled this program, I have to say that you have a beautiful coin there. I think they knocked that out of the park.
Or is at least part of it that they are overpriced, in part because of the mandated premium$ for certain favored causes?
The US Mint, by the way, had a booth at the World Money Fair this past weekend. And they had a 5 oz piece right there, see this post ... Christian
Just got all of mine in. All look good, but one from a quick spot check at work. Someone had some dirty hands when packaging the Kennedy in the capsule. There's a small piece of grass or something on the obverse and the reverse has some black stuff. Looks almost like small pieces of the black liner from their standard packaging. Once I get home tonight, I'll take some pictures. Maybe I'll get some sweet toning in a few years if I leave it
Well here's the Kennedy I was talking about above. Tried to take it out of the capsule in order to blow out the little brown piece of something on the top-left of the obverse rim and also to get a better look at the black stuff. Unfortunately the capsule seems stronger than I am and kind of don't want to risk the coin going for trip across the room. The more I look at it through a loupe, I think the finish of the coin is screwy.
Hey guys. Long-time lurker here. I was really excited to get my order today. Promptly took all the coins out of their holders to play with them. The .999 silver proofs have a super sharp ridge around the obverse edge near the bottom. You can see the spikes with your naked eye. One of them looks like a hole saw! I have only ever bought bullion eagles before, so I have never owned a proof of any kind, nor have I ever dealt with graded coins, but, I was considering sending this in to get graded and I am wondering if this edge, which I would consider "poor" would prevent these from getting graded as First Strike 70. Your thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
Just use a hair dryer on it for a few minutes until warm and it will be easier to open. I’m interested to see what’s going on with the obverse at around 10 o’clock. TC
Oh nice. I'll try that out when I get a chance. That little piece on the obverse looked to be a very small cardboard shaving.
I like how they made the moons separating the missions the different phases..nice touch This is the one coin I'd actually consider getting the 5oz version... I love it and think it would look awesome displayed on my desk Would love to see any photos of the 5oz coin. I thought I'd read earlier that a few people were able to get one before they went unavailable.

@Skippy Topaz , here are some pics (not as good as the Chief's!) that show the cool size difference between the half dollar version and the 5 oz version.
Man, that is awesome... thanks for posting those pics.. this really is the only 5 ouncer I ever considered getting (unless the ever make one of the 1976 Bicentennial Quarter, love that reverse) and will definitely be getting one of these
That edge is really pronounced. I'm going to have to go back and take a closer look at mine FYI, you won't get "First Strike" unless you send the coins in an unopened package from the Mint. Makes no sense if your order date is the first day, but check the rules for that.
According to this page, you just have to beat the cut-off date to get "Early Release" from NGC. Looks like it's Feb 25th for the Apollo coins. https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/1876/2018-First-and-Early-Releases-Cutoff-Dates/
In case you didn’t get the embossed printed thing. If you subscribed to it the thing was $17 including shipping, otherwise something like $25 plus shipping. This is probably the first thing that I can say that I wish I never ordered. Unless by chance there is a spike in online prices, then I'll sell it .. no problems here. They did have low mintage of 8,000 which was sold out. There's a few more in this series which I apparently signed up, repaid for. So .. smh
Do you realize these are selling for 80.00-120.00 on eBay. Out of all the Apollo products the engraved print is selling the best on the aftermarket I wish I bought 20 of them
ooh ... well .. guess I'll go check out eBay now. I thought of ordered several of them too .. but I figured one was enough as it was cheap. EDIT: "Sold"s were $75-80 each with a few up to $125. I guess it's time to cash in on this. thanks for the head's up.
