    Panzerman,
I’ve bought from N N auctions for the last two years without any problems and am happy with the purchases. The 3 weeks it takes for my winings to reach California is not an issue, nor is payment since it is via Paypal.

Naumann is a terrible dealer and I recommend everyone boycott their next auction (as there are a number of coins listed I want to buy!). Just kidding, they're fine, though shipping does take a little long sometimes.

I agree. I don't trust that coin at all, which wouldn't be the first time one of their pricier coins was suspect.

I have bought a ton of coins from their auctions in the past. Shipping can have some delays, but it is what it is. As for grading standards, every dealer and auction house seems to have different opinions. Use your own judgement.

For me, the way I grade is do I like this coin or don't I. I would suggest looking at the detail, strike, and most of all eye appeal and determine whether or not you want the coin in your collection. Great patina and surfaces to me can make up in eye appeal for lack of technical grade IMO.

Also, any auction house can be susceptible to selling fake coins. Being human as we are, good fakes can fool just about any of us from time to time. NN is a reputable auction house, but just like with anyone look at the coin and make sure you are comfortable with it before buying. I will say though that I had a coin break once in the mail from NN, and they gave me a full refund including the fees and let me keep the coin. They were very prompt and courteous about it too.

I asked too. (I hate the extra fees Fedex charges, plus they automatically seem to incur duty even when it doesn't apply.) Every other auction house has been happy to do so, except for Naumann. I guess I don't spend enough with them. Well, now I spend even less: zero! :)

I have dealt with Naumann a number of times and have always been pleased. As for grading ... who cares. I either like the coin or I do not. As I have been gathering a number of rarities lately sometimes one has no choice but to accept worn or problematic coins. When there are only 3-5 examples of a coin known and one comes up for auction one has to accept less than perfect coins. I still have to like the coin however. also take some solace in the fact that the coins are exported legally and have the paperwork to back this up. At some point I will get rid of my coins and having these records may be important in the future.

The conversation has drifted a bit off topic.. but is there an existing thread on the subject of hidden fees, conversion rates, duties etc? Or maybe should we start one?
I'm up against that right now and its a bit of a gauntlet.

Agreed. I was sold a proven fake by a major U.S auction house. I was sold a proven fake by a dealer who doesn't sell on eBay, but regularly rails against buying on eBay because fakes are sold on eBay. I've been sold a coin of questionable authenticity from a major, reputable European auction house. I've bought several genuine coins on eBay, but no fakes from eBay (at least none that I know of).

Back on topic, I've bought from Naumann a number of times, but not for the last maybe three or four auctions. I've never had any problems with them, and yes, as others have said, the coins always look better than the photos. I'm not sure if they still ship FedEx but they used to.

The only problem for me with their FedEx-only shipping policy is that they won't ship to P.O. boxes. I've gotten around this by managing the shipment. I tell them to hold it at the nearest FedEx location, and once it's delivered there I go pick it up. A slight inconvenience, but I like the predictability and speed of FedEx versus regular mail, and I'd rather not have shipments come to the house.

I looked in my Friedberg book, checked out their ancient gold section, i could not find identical Double Daric. In another book dealing with Persian coinage, "Numismatic Art of Persia" its listed on page 92/93 under Macedonian Empire/ satraps of Babylon under Alexander/ temp. Stamenes/ Seluekos 328-11BC:happy:

This exact coin isn't in that book so I'm not sure what this is supposed to indicate? Just because a particular coin purports to be of a similar type doesn't make it genuine. Further, even if a coin appears to be from the same pair of dies, that doesn't prove it's real: there are many ways to make a fake coin where it would look like a near perfect match.

I'm assuming you're referring to this double daric which is unquestionably genuine and extremely different from the Naumann coin:

I understand your view, I also would be leary to gamble 23K euros or more on this coin. I really do not know much about this auction house, reason for my thread. There are not many good reference books on the subject. It will be most interesting to see if this coin ends up being withdrawn from auction.;)

I've seen many obvious fakes from them not withdrawn so I'm skeptical, but we'll see.

When dealing with expensive coins like this, the best advice is to buy examples from reputable sources with verifiable pedigrees that indicate a history of ownership and that they passed through multiple sets of hands.

I often bid in Numismatik Naumann auctions and have never had a problem. They ship by DHL now, but shipping takes a while because of the export paperwork necessary.

My latest purchase from them. It was graded VF:

Here is the photo of that AV Double Daric 438092.l.jpg Price is still at 22K euros (6 bids) I am sure a lot of bidders have doubts, otherwise this coin would be bid up to 50K by now....

I've had FedEX lose a coin and three weeks ago I ordered a copy of my doctoral dissertation (which I completed in 2000) and it went missing for three weeks because the package had broken open. Eventually they found it and shipped it to me so I got it on Tuesday. So I find FedEX pretty frustrating to deal with. USPS does a much better job on coins. I also have received European auction house coins and M-A shops coins through DHL, which by far is the fastest delivery service.

I much prefer to coins to be shipped discreetly, no customs hassles, duties, chance coins will go MIA due to theft.

They are one of the auction houses that fall within my budget range and i have bought quite some coins from them, also when they were Gitbud and Naumann and where on pecunem or something. Not all the coins fall within my budget of course, but some times i get lucky and win a very nice one that has been on my want list. Shipping is what it is though, but hey, if i want a coin for quite some time and finally 'win' it, i will be able to wait a bit more, right?
About grading, it seems that coins that i would grade XF, are some times graded VF, and the other way around. I find it very difficult to find some logic behind the system of grading. And besides, why bother because my budget only premits a certain range (F - VF in general) i look at the pictures to see if i like it or not, do some research and then decide if i go for it.
So, give them a try mr Panzerman, is my opinion!

    I will...
I usually go for only MS quality/ CNG EF:happy:

The coin I am after is MS, and looks to have great eye appeal. So hopefully it will not snow, that I can bid in real time.

Just a thought, some have commented on Fedex and the cost. I have found that a simple e-mail asking that they hold a lot (or lots) to combine with a future auction is well received. In a recent auction I bid on about 100 lots but only won a single coin for 22 Euro, and shipping was 15 Euro. They were happy to hold it for me until I win other lots. I dont know if Naumann does this.
