It is more like Gawdens! Also, I believe that it was pronounced Dis-mee but folks did not like the word and it was changed to Dime! Frank
Pronunciation: \sānt-ˈgȯ-dənz, sənt-\ Audio: http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/audio.pl?bixsai02.wav=Saint-Gaudens
Actually no I'm not but don't fret. I would go with Gawdens but if you really get down to it the pronunciation will vary greatly depending on where you happen to be. That would be dialect and very interesting at that. In the coin circles it is most likely Gawdens which is most likely wrong. Is that more helpful? Sorry if I offended you but if I hadn't stated that someone else would have. I can pretty much guarantee that. clembo
That's cool. Never used the audio function before. Thanks. No worries. Not offended here. I thought a sarcastic response would be a good follow up to your answer. I just want to avoid sounding like a moron in the coin store I frequent. I always cringe when I hear someone mis-pronounce a word, so thanks for the contribution in your second post. I'm sure local dialect plays a big part, now that you mention it.
Touchee my friend (let's not get into the pronunciation ). You'll fit right in. THe site listed IS cool and, hey, it was Gawdens! clembo
I know what your saying. One time I was in a coin shop looking around. A guy came in and started looking at the most expensive gold coins in the place. The owner asked the guy if he had any questions. The guy asks "Do these coins have any numbtistic value?" I cringed so hard, I almost fell over.
That is actually a problem that I have when, in the US, I see a name or other word that "looks German" to me. @CoinGal07: In English you use the old spelling of thaler, with "th". In German we dropped the H a couple of decades ago, so it's just Taler. One time when I used that spelling in an English forum message (not knowing about the English usage), I was told that "you as a German should know how it's spelled". Turned out that was a tongue-in-cheek reply ... Anyway, simply use "taler", hehe. Christian
fine... but is it 'taler like taller / dollar' or 'taler like mailer / baler'? Or is that based on location too?
There are conflicting opinions as to how the word disme is pronounced. Some say it is pronounced dime and others say it is pronounced deem.
