Are these anything special?

My wife has a couple of these (2 $50's and 2 $100's) and She has wondered for some time if they have any special value. Her father (long since deceased) had them with some papers and she kept them for obvious reasons. Since I just joined this site, I thought this would be a good place to get an opinion. I only posted the fronts to save time and bandwidth. The backs are clean and unmarked.

    Anyone have any opinions?

Indeed...the $100 Type 2 National Bank (Fr1890D) note is very nice...with 276,000 printed it is worth ~ $350 in CHCU63...that note looks AU to me...the center fold may take a little more away from it possibily lowering it to XF or high XF ~ $235 to $275.

The $50 is a Chicago note Series 1928A in F to XF as the chip ot of the top right drops it value. The center folds and general wear say XF the small tear says F. 5,263,956 notes printed value ~ $80-$100

Put it in a mylar sleeve and hold on to it!!

Post pics of the reverse as well...that will tell another story all its own.

    RickieB,

Thank you, ... the wife will be surprised to hear this. The other $100. is from Chicago and shows more wear. Here is the back of the one I posted. Until I get the proper sleeves, would an acid free sheet protector suffice?

Hi Greg..yes..acid free will do. Get mylar as soon as you can.

Keep in mind that scans often hide elements you can not see. The reverse of the 100 you show does portray a few more fold lines that the obverse. That note may now go as an XF...I am by no means a professional grader..just have a lot of visual experience. Many others here will have an idea as well and between us all, you will get a good mean average grade!
The reverse also seems to exhibt some slight "foxing" (discoloration) is it the scanner or do you see slight staining on the note??

    Good luck..

    RickieB,

I, by no means, have the right equipment to take close macro photos. These were taken under fluorescent lighting with a GE "Reveal" flood as supplemental lighting. I did use a tripod and no flash so basically, I don't know what I'm doing. These shots were taken with a SONY Cybershot 5.1. I have a scanner but seldom use it. You gave me a good estimate and I appreciate that. We will definitely see they get better care from now on.

Iwould say that the pics are pretty good with what you did. Do you have jpeg editing software??
If so enlarge the pic and resize it for the web...we will have closer image to look at.

    Thanks for your efforts..nice job!

I just checked my two local hobby shops for the clear sleeves to keep bills in and neither place had them. Is there a reasonable place on line I can order some?? I need a bunch for for a collection of silver certificates the wife has as well.

...looking for a recommendation from a satisfied customer.

nice notes!:thumb: that $50 bill is a close error becuase the serial numbers and seal is off center. i don't know what that does to the value, but it makes it neater! :D

Also, one cool thing about the $50 is that it states that it is "redeemable in gold," which is something that was closed in 1934. These are technically different than the gold certificates, which were required to be turned over during the depression.

Here are their ugly "Brother and Sister". I have since taken them from the cardboard sleeve they have been in since 1983 (I know that was a big mistake) and placed them in an acid free sheet protector until the "prolar" sleeves arrive. I'm sure some of the discoloration is from the cardboard. I should have stumbled onto this site a LONG time ago.

    Greg..

Those are much more worn/folded than the other two. Too bad about the writting on them. Whatever you do, do not try to erase the writting...leave it alone.
Those note will go for VG to F at minimum.

    Thanks for sharing..

As long as there are no holes, tears, or other damage, I usually tend towards the F side, but tears/holes are sometimes difficult to spot from a photo.
