The cynical part of me says that this is a way for dealers to write the coins off on their taxes, get free advertising, and dispose of their common date, low grade widget dreck all in one operation (save for the few expensive pieces that might be released).
For the record (as they say) by "stroke themselves" I meant: to make themselves feel good emotionally, stroke and soothe their own egos by creating for themselves a reason to pat themselves on the back.
I imagine the large majority of people who find these will have no clue what they are "seeing". Also, I suspect you are right, they'll take them to a LCS to try and sell. If however, 5% of the people who find one decides to get into the hobby, I see it as a big plus.
Wheat cents are collecible. Dateless buffalos are collectible. I bet that is 90% of what was released to the wild.
I been guilty of doing this for years. I often use Ike’s for tipping. I very frequently hand out dateless Buffalo’s. Have yet to see any show up here. I doubt there will be more than a few CT queries.
It's still a pain for them and ultimately will just end up stiffing them on a tip. Plus how happy do you think they'll be when someone says here this is equal to being $20 and then they take the time and effort to go to a shop (which may have been the one to give it to them) and they only get offered 5 or 10 bucks? Or even worse they say they aren't interested in it at all, because that's what's going to happen if they don't remember giving the tip. At least give them a choice between the coin or being tipped normally, it's just common courtesy when it comes to tips. The prize ones yes, most of the others I seriously doubt anyone will even realize that they had found. I really doubt that many of them are going to be anything more than culls, wheats or low grade common indians with little to no extra value. I would bet the overwhelming majority is just going to be things they haven't been able to sell with little to no value over face
I was kind of hoping that map would be interactive on the Coin World site. I was wondering if any of my dealer buddies were participating.
You (or someone who knows someone at CoinWorld) should make that suggestion. I thought the same thing... it would be cool to be able to at least zoom in.
I got rid of a roll of dateless buffalo's by releasing them into the wild. My hope was that it made someone's day.
Just think, these coins may circulate for many, many, years. Someone a hundred years from now will wonder about the ancient wheat penny or other that they just found in pocket change or a coin roll.
Amazing idea to stir interest in collecting. Come on in millenials. Us old farts want to get you interested. The General
