Good morning coin talk!! It's me again coming at yall with something different. 1974 S silver ike. These are the best pics i could get. Just wanted some opinions on this one. It is in a slab. The reverse is much nicer than the obverse. thanks for looking. Please comment!!!
Purty. Is that what you'd call "end roll toning"? With the reverse facing outwards in the roll? Did these even come in rolls?
This is whats known as a brown ike. They come in the brown wood grain lookin boxes. Hard to say how this happened. @Lehigh96 have a look please
No iv had this one for a long time. Could never get a descent photo. Still not great thought id share anyway
It could also be a PCI slab. They are known for toning coins, Anacs also but I don't believe to the same degree.
Those colors look striking and would garner a decent premium. I do suspect these have been assisted at some point but the TPGs have allowed some to pass as market acceptable. It reminds me of this one from eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/1977-S-Pro...517997?hash=item23b485b96d:g:F-IAAOSwvzRXzg-Z
This is an AT coin. I have one like it too. Notice that little white halo spot right across from the tip of Ike's nose on your coin? These little spots are almost always present on vivid, wildly toned, and obviously AT Ikes. There's plenty to choose from on eBay at any given time. Here's mine: These angled shots really show the AT effect. On the reverse of my coin, those little red dots, like the white halo on your coin, are kind of like hotspots from sulfur contamination. The irregular maroon color pattern on both sides gives the appearance of scorch marks. Ikes just don't naturally tone like this. Mine was likely gassed through the slab, but some managed to straight grade a few years back. I can't see how PCGS would have let this one pass, but I guess it's possible. See below for a excerpt from Rob Ezerman of the Ike Group regarding the influx of these gassed Ikes onto the market back a few years ago: "At least one large trash bag of 71-s Brown packs were AT'ed somewhere in the mid-west some years ago, best guess is several hundred exist. The creator threw a handful of elemental sulfer in the bag and left the bag in his garage attic for one or two hot summers. So, you're correct, AT, gassed. I have a couple of these I bought for $30 back when Sego had a goodly number he was selling as NT (close to 10 years ago). While colors vary from one to another, the over-the-top iridescence makes them instantly recognizable. Rob I'm not saying that your coin came from this grouping, but people have been at this for a while now. There are so many ruined Ikes out there because of this practice.
