Okay. That wasn't my intent but point taken I suppose. I think the overuse of 'proper' terms scares folks away though. I've been collecting over 10 years now and I guess I haven't learned to be so overly articulate yet so I suppose I'm hopeless and that another year won't help much.
depends how enveloped in the hobby you want to get. I deal in other "hobbies" too and in one of them I have to know all the fine details and intricacies as I deal with top people in the hobby. To a newbie person though they won't know .. and you get all the people in between. paddyman is at the top echelon of the hobby so accuracy counts for him. You've probably seen the "double die" vs "doubled die" posts.
@Prez2 Also, I should add, what if we tell a newbie a certain generic thing about their coins. And they get the impression that it's worth a lot of money. So they send their coin(s) off to be graded and it comes back just as junk. Then how is that inaccurate information doing anyone any good? The TPG graders are not going to be lenient in grading or in numismatic terms. They are going to be exact (for what they deem exact, not us). Just look at how many newbie posts we get on "how much is this worth?" Not everyone is going to be in this hobby for the exact reasons you are. And we're not mind readers, nor do we control other people's thinking, nor reasoning nor interpretation (not everyone speaks perfect dictionary based english). So if we don't follow the numismatic terms we end up not being fair to anyone and in the end may provide a disservice. If you go to the other numismatic websites you'd find that this CT site is lenient and friendly by comparison.
Okay thanks Claw. I have no bone to picky with Paddy. H'es always been friendly and pleasant with me. The whole point of my post was completely missed so whatever. Nothing wrong with accuracy but for instance, when somebody gets called out for calling a cent a penny. We know what they mean so I see it as a bit silly to call them out for it. Appreciate the response.
Paddyman is obviously quite educated in this field and I am not of his caliber nor would I challenge his wisdom overall. However, some areas are open to opinion and some are merely speculative. That's the area I thought I was coming from when I was trying to point out how long 'oddities/errors/varieties/etc,etc' sometimes take to be recognized and how many if not most are quick to shout 'you have nothing' at the drop of a hat as their default answer. I used the coin referenced as an example or proof of that. It was a very general, friendly comment not intended to get as carried away as it did and I meant no harm. Just was pointing out something that I found interesting which I thought was part and parcel to the purpose of the forum. Far as 'doubled die' versus 'double die'? What's the big deal about highlighting that? I see none. We know what was meant. The op knows what they meant and so on. Seems like it turns into an 'I'm smarter than you' thing. Also seems like the 'purists' (for lack of a better word) are afraid of somebody else invading 'their' hobby. I don't know. Geez this gets old. So, I'll close with saying yes, you and Paddy are more experienced than I. Honest to God it is getting ridiculous. You have a great night.
No, I think I caused the chaos unintentionally. My bad, not your fault. I should know better than to ask a question I don't already know the answer to. It's all good.
@Prez2 I am not referring to you personally. Do not get me wrong. 1st) I was 90% sure that my penny was die deteriorated, that's why I placed it on my thread "title" 2nd) This doesn't mean I am not keeping the penny, to answer your initial objection @Prez2 3rd) whatever the case, I do not like people jump into conclusions about "newbies". I am a new collector but I do my best, studying, a lot...like a... lot!!! I keep my expectations low but this doesn't mean that any "new" or "peculiar" find should not go under the spectrum of the experienced in this forum. Every time I post something I feel weird. This doesn't mean I will ever stop. I just love it!!!@paddyman98
