I'm going to withhold the grade that these were given by SGS for the moment until some people have guessed, if you want. What I'd like to know is how do you all think these coins would grade legitimately? The coins are 1883-O, 1884-O, 1887-P, 1885-P. I couldn't get one of the slabs open for the scan, but hopefully they will all be clear enough. The images over at imageshack are roughly 4 MB in size, so if you're on dial-up, you might be a while downloading! Thanks for the opinions. P.S. I was not aware these coins were not graded by a legitimate company when I purchased them in a set on eBay from Coinassets. They just said the coins were slabbed at a certain MS--- grade (I'll reveal the grade later on in the discussion). Here's the link for Reverse: [IMG]

I would call them MS64 but the pics are very bright, they look VERY nice in those pics I dont see much in the way of dings or worn areas.

As for what SGS would grade them. Hmm. Im gonna say they over graded them. MS69?

With all that said, I have seen SGS over and undergrade coins.
My regular Dealer has some SGS slabs in his store that he got form some one collection he bought out. all the coins look correctly grades. But he has them marked for about 20% less them PCGS and NGC slabs with the same coins in them.

I'll say SGS graded them MS-66. :D Check the title of the page when you open it up. :D I would call them AU-MS, all cleaned. Could be wrong though.

No. Seriously. These aren't 69 or 70 for freaking sure. Even an amature like me knows that!

Are they possibly MS66? Are they worth sending in to get graded?

SGS grades all Morgans either 66 or 67, and alot of them have the DMPL, but I doubt these do. They appear to be 64's to me, actually a bit of a suprise considering the source....top left and bottom right prob a 63, if they are not AU, hard to tell from pics, but to go 65, they must be fully struck, and these are not.

    WELCOME to the forum !!

For the record, Huntsman53 (Frank) was just kidding.
We kid a lot about SGS slabs here.
I am sure that no offense or snub was intended.
But, we all (well, most of us) hate SGS.

[And those who don't hate them, have just started collecting. They will learn.]

Yep, I was just kidding! I hate SGS just about as much as Hobo hates Ambro for showing his Matte Proof Lincolns!:goofer::hammer:

Now to be serious! It is really hard to grade coins from pictures but my best guess is that the coins would go MS-63 to MS-64. Considering that they are common date coins and if you paid at or near actual market prices for the coins, then having them graded would be just spending money with little possible increase in value over raw coins. In other words, if you paid at or very near actual market prices for the coins and then paid to have them graded, then you would have more money in the coins than they are now or will be worth in the near future!

Yeah.... I know you were kidding. HardieHar! :p

Well, that bums me out. I suppose I should call the company and tell them they've got to take this junk back. The pennies were probably picked clean before I got them, very few pennies 1937 or older down to 1912. I thiink I pulled about 50 of those from four bags of 270 each. Of course there were lots of steel pennies, but they're not worth squat to me. The other coins were there, as promised, but the dates were common and the condition was average, so nothing more than ordinary value there either. I paid about $730 for all of it, but I'm not seeing the value. And I bought it on the premise that those Morgons were actually MS66 as they state in the auction, so, they're going back. Or they're going to have to send me other coins to make it right. I'll keep you guys informed on what happens. Right now, I have to go to the Republican Caucus to make sure our votes aren't wasted on the traitor/liberal from hell McCain.

    Watermonkey,

It is hard to tell from the scans for me at least but seems others are getting a better look and I trust these guys.

As pointed out SGS loves the MS66 and 67 grades. Sucks people in as it were.

If you got 63 or 64 coins you actually did well. THEY WILL slab an AU coin as high end MS.

If you are able to get your money back and paid over legit MS63-4 prices do so. You can always buy real MS63-64 coins cheaper at that point.

Treashunt pointed out the overwhelming opinion of SGS here. Nothing but crooks disguised as a legitimate business. On the other hand I'm sure we are ALL glad that you aked!

Also too with SGS, they'll also slab a cleaned coin, and not mark it on the holder. Very risky to deal with them IMHO, if at all. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do with them! :thumb:

Question... did you crack the slabs or do all SGS slabs come apart so easily?

I thought slabs (no matter who slabbed them) were supposed to be sealed and the listed grade void if opened.

SGS and NNC crack very easy, just twist em.....

    Grades?

Probably sound 63s, maybe a 64 tops on the 83, but like beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder. Just an oppion....Nothing more.
