I'd like to ask a question about many of the listings for Morgans on eBay, they either specify 7TF or 8TF. Am I wrong in assuming that this has to do with tail feathers? If it DOES pertain to tail feathers, then how many should I be seeing on this coin?
Thanks, does this mean that ones with 8TF will appear on coins from the same year or mint origin, or do they differ from year to year?
@LA_Geezer Not to ask a dumb question, but WHAT THE HECK does a 7 vs. 8 tail feather Morgan question have to do with Peace dollars? I'm sure there are Morgan threads on this Board. I like Morgans, just IMO they shouldn't be on this thread. Bringing things back where they should be...
Here's a 1922 Peace I love....you need hold this in hand to truly get the effect....well struck and some how the mid coin both obv. & rev. Isn't toned...my only wish would be that the rev. Tones totally that golden mauve color, as this specimen also has a sweet strike.....
I've found my thread! Enjoying looking at all these pictures, particularly that wonderfully toned '35 upthread. I'm aiming ultimately for a complete Peace set, and I'm a little over halfway there, but the '21 and '28 still to go. I'd like to start with the '22 Peaces I picked up recently. Abundant date, couldn't resist getting a few of these because they were so beautiful & so affordable (didn't pay more than $21 shipped for any of these). But ultimately I'll sell all but two. Which two should I keep? Coin #1 (the lines are pieces of tape, not on the coin - which now that I notice them, I will remove! possible die crack on neck? seems a common variety though) Coin #2 (seller listed as MS-62) Coin #3 (seller listed as MS-63 with die crack on neck) I'm going to make a new post for 4 and 5.
Coin #4 (seller listed as MS-63 - I'm thinking AU actually) Coin #5 (prime candidate for dipping? low wear, if any, but mostly ugly toning)
@Ag76 I'd keep # 1 as it looks attractive to me. As you mentioned, 1922's are common, and each of the others has issues, at least for my taste. If you want to have two (heck, why stop there? ) 1922's, I think it'd be worthwhile to spend a little more and get a higher quality coin, it should still be inexpensive.
My 1922-D. Overall nice circulated coin, maybe EF-45. Too bad about the little sulfide spots on the reverse. Not going to post the 22-S. It's filling the hole in the collection right now but unfortunately two small but deep scratches on the obverse mar it for me. I'll replace it once the budget allows. Next up: 1923.
@Ag76 , good luck with your collection. I'm also on a quest to complete mine. I'm having a very hard time finding "S" mint marks that I like. I still need 24, 25, 27 & 34 along with a couple "D" mint marks. Here's my most recent "S" mint mark addition. 1935 S MS65 by JPeace$ posted Jan 15, 2019 at 8:55 PM 1935 S MS65 reverse by JPeace$ posted Jan 15, 2019 at 8:55 PM
1923 Philadelphias... another common date, picked up several low-MS, high-AU types in lots at good prices. There are 3 coins I'm trying to decide between keeping. Coin #1 - attractive golden toning throughout, plenty of hits, hint of perhaps a wipe on reverse near the beginning of the motto Coin #2 - listed as MS-63, which seems generous given the discoloration & neck hits, but it might be the nicest of these three. Deeper golden toning than Coin #1. Not a rim ding at 7 o'clock, just light reflecting off the plastic. Coin #3 - listed at MS-64, which is a joke, surely: the cheek lines suggest cleaning, am I right? Certainly didn't bid on that grade. More uneven toning here, but the color - a rich golden brown - is attractive in hand. Strongest strike of the three, I think. Again, I'm leaning toward Coin #2, but I'm open to opinions here. Maybe there are problems I don't see.
Thanks. What a superb coin your 35-S is! Seeing this sort of thing tempts me to look at Heritage, but I know my budget can't handle it right now. The 35S is one I'm going to stick with in VF/EF for the foreseeable.
Hi Jason, Not all coins at Heritage are expensive. There are usually a lot of '21, '22 and '23 P's available to choose from in many price points. You just have to be aware of the 20% BP and their S&H is a little stiff. I recommend visiting the site to see what might interest you.
Good to know... Verrry quick tour... looks as if everything is slabbed. Mostly high-grade too. Not sure I can compete. My strategy on Ebay was to buy big lots at low price per coin, with the idea of flipping the ones I don't like... after silver goes up a bit more. But once I have some extra cash to spend, I'll take another look at HA.
99% of coins at Heritage are slabbed. Very rare to see one raw. I wasn't sure what you were looking to accomplish, just wanted to let you know not all coins on the site are expensive. Of course, expensive is a relative term. I wish you well in your Peace Dollar collection.
