Hello, I've acquired two bank rolls of 1961 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickels. I gingerly pulled out about 4 of the coins and they have great luster and definition. I would like to inspect them further with my 6x magnifier. Will I destroy any value by opening and searching through the rolls ? Thanks, Laura
On eBay there is sometimes a premium that is payed for unsearched bank rolls. If the nickels are in mint condition and you verify that - then go to sell them you can show pictures of what the buyer will be getting. Spin it the right way with photos to back it up and you should be okay. If you open them and they are in rough shape then that's a different story. Buy cotton gloves and handle them in this manner - photo to back it up. This will reduce exposure to grease and oils (finger prints) - collectors are likely to pay more if they know they have been handled carefully. This is all just my opinion - others may differ! Good Luck Darryl Please post pictures - we luv to see coins
How do you know these have not been opened before you bought them? Some believe there is no such thing as an OBW roll. I am sure there are OBW rolls out there but the vast majority being sold as such are not. Anyways 1961 are common and will only carry a small premium. On the other hand if you find a nice MS66 or 67 it could be worth hundreds and with Full Steps thousands. If I had them and knew they where OBW I would search them and the few dollars I would lose on the resell would be worth the enjoyment. But thats just me
Thanks for the replies. I think you're right, I'll search them in hopes of finding 5 or 6 steps, although I understand my chances are as about as good as buying a lottery ticket and winning !! Anyway...it's the enjoyment I'll get during the hunt. I'll let ya know what I find. Laura P.S. how do ya'll get such good quality photos of your coins? I know I should try macro, (and I have a Cannon 7.1 Megapixel Camera) but, trying to get the right illumination is the challenge it seems. Also, should I try posting them with Photobucket ?
Yes and most certainly yes! Shoot at a slight angle if you have to use the flash. Glad you are going to look at them - Good Luck!!!
I agree with nickelman. :thumb: What I do to get good pics is put it on the lowest quality setting if you can, and then put it in macro. Reason for putting it on the lowest quality is you can normally (atleast for me) zoom in closer on the coin, while in macro mode. Hope this helps! Best of luck, and look forward to seeing pics! :thumb: Phoenix
Here's what I found !! Hi guys, Well, I searched them and found 2 coins in particular that have the majority of the steps showing. Unfortunately, lots of bag marks. What do ya think ? Any value ? I'de love your response. Thanks, Laura P.S. I posted all four coins on the general discussion forum.
