    Hi All

    1) This is my first post on this forum, I do hope by posting in this particular section I am not violating any rules.

With that being said, I am humbly requesting information on this coin. Is it authentic? The |S| mint on the back of the coin means what? I've never seen that before.

    Thank you!

  3. Double Die

Double Die I know just enough to be dangerous

I'm not sure about the authenticity of the coin itself but I do see a very prominent die clash on both sides of it.

Should I take that as a positive? Do most of these models have a "die clash"? I'm a newbie in this field.

I’m going with fake for two reason. One, there’s two lines surrounding the Mint Mark. Two, the star below the MM is incused, if it was a real clash, it would be above the coin I think? I wouldn’t touch this coin with a 10 foot pole.

That double line surrounding the S is what I'm especially curious about, but thank you for the feedback

In addition to the lines around the mint mark, the obverse struck me immediately as fake. A gut reaction, but I’ve studied a lot of these.

Here’s an obverse from my 1898-S to compare. I suggest you take yours to a reliable dealer for another opinion.

Do you own this coin? If so, how did it come into your possession?

I don't own it, it's currently in Egypt.

Another tip off that’s its proabably fake. I’m not saying all American coins being sold from other countries are fake, or that all coins sold in the US are real, but as a general rule, most people shy away from buying coins from other countries if they can avoid it.

Leave it in Egypt - find a better one for less locally - a reputable dealer + visual inspection are key

I'm betting this one was listed at a really low price. At least, it would be low compared to real coins.

Every once in a while I look at eBay sold listings for double eagles, sorted by increasing price, starting with a cutoff of something like $800 to weed out the "tribute" coins and other such trash. I usually see at least a couple that went for not much more than that. Sometimes they're obvious fakes, but they still convinced someone they were real. Sometimes the photos look good, but feedback shows they were never delivered. Every once in a long while, someone apparently gets an actual double eagle well below melt -- but the odds are heavily against it.

Funny enough a gold/diamond trader in my network contacted me about this coin, adamant about its authenticity. It's currently not being listed anywhere. Appreciate all of the replies thus far!

I'm not an expert but even that S look really odd to me that I would skip it. Many more better examples out there. Especially if it's from Egypt. If it's fake, and takes a couple weeks to get to you, do you think you'd seriously get your money back?

I get my old gold coins from apmex, provident or coin shows and a couple other eBay sellers that seem well vetted out who's name I can't recall right now. I'm not good enough to call out a good fake to take a chance elsewhere.

I have bought a lot of old gold over the years. Always by the seat of my pants and good old fashioned “feel” I suppose. I’m the first to admit I do not have the savvy and education of most of the guys here....... But I agree. I would absolutely walk away from that double eagle. Too many good ones to choose from much closer than that one is. Welcome to the forum!

Wonder if that trader could explain what would cause those bars on either side of the mint mark?

There's an eBay seller from Egypt peddling TONS of fake U.S. coins on eBay. It is just awful.
