I came across this one in a roll from the bank recently. Mirror like finish. "Smudged" text on the obverse and some other possible defects. Thoughts?

"Shine" doesn't necessarily mean anything good. In this case, it looks like the coin has been polished. Note the lack of detail in JFK's hair.

Chris, lean a bit, what is that over top of JFK's head? Strange.

If you mean that small mark above the "E", it could be a rim break or just PMD, but it's too hard for me to tell.

Just PM me your address, Tommy, so I can send you the chiropractor's bill.

I never thought of that , but you must have seen 100s of them . That would account for the shine and lack of detail .

Here is a better pic of the coin. You can see the area above the "E" better. A similar, but small, gouge is by the "L" also. I occasionally search half dollar roles for silver and this was in a $10 role that was otherwise full of 40% 1965-1969's. In fact, in the 4 $10 roles I took home from the bank that day, I found 8-1964 and nearly 50-1965-1969! Quite a treasure trove for spending $40 on them.

Yep. Also the flattened ear and IGWT. It's been buffed so hard as to lose a significant amount of metal.

It's a coin that was encased in a holder of some sort and used as jewelery. A coin of this size would probably have been in a necklace; smaller coins are often seen as cuff links, buttons, rings, bracelets, etc. These types are often polished or plated and show some rim damage from being in a holder.

Do you still have this coin?
The rim above E is pretty interesting.

I do. Also what about between the D and O of DOLLAR on the reverse?

    It's probably been polished.
Those scratches. And, it scrapes off an outer layer of metal and leaves it looking
    shiny. (But damaged.) 50 cents.

I agree with polished, to death.

I'd imagine that the two areas opposite each other are damage. Doesn't look like it happened at the mint.
